Hooniverse Asks: What Car Would You Absolutely Buy if it Fell Into Your Price Range?

dream car
I’d always wanted to have a Volvo, but never could swing the price on a decent one, nor could I justify buying one as a fun car because of similar funds issues. That all changed this year – more about this in the next couple of weeks – when I bought an older longroof that was just too good a deal to pass up, and which fell solidly in my change from the couch price range.
There have been a number of cars that I’ve always wanted but which never had prices that dipped down low enough to make them attainable in my financial strata. In fact, I’m surprised that I was able to swing the Volvo. Still, I track prices on a number of cars, giving up on those that by now will never happen, and looking at others that are dropping precariously close to my wallet’s web. If any of those get low enough, I’m going to jump.
What about you, do you also have a litany of models whose depreciation may be given their present owners ulcers, but have you saying under your breath come to papa? Which ones are those? What are the cars that you would buy if they came into your price range?

      My immediate thought, as well.
I have picked up a multitude of cars that I got simply because the price was unbelievably affordable.

All my cars except my current “grownup-van” were bought by this very principle.

BTW, I am still not over reaction GIFs, which evidently is the new thing to be “over.”

I know, I know, but fashions are for the weak soul. I’ll still be enarmoured with reaction GIFs when I am old, rich, and have amassed ALL THE CARS. So to speak.

I’m here thinking Z06, McLaren, 911, Pagani, Chevy SS, Hellcat, CTS-V, ATS-V … Heck, almost anything.
Perhaps the better question is what car would you never buy regardless of how cheap it was.

I’m not sure if it would be the “better” question, but it sure is harder. There are a lot of cars the Global Taste and Reliability Statistics Committee has deemed crap ready to forget, but I’d try it anyway. On the other hand, there are lots of powerful cars of the “rich man’s toys” variety that I’d like to try, but that I wouldn’t know how to own. There are no tracks in my vicinity and I’d really prefer to keep my license.

        1. salguod Avatar

Yeah, I get that. A coworker had his brothers E36 AMG for a couple of weeks and took a few of us out in it, even let folks drive it. I had never been in a car with that kind of power and it, frankly, scared me just riding in it. He asked if I wanted to drive it and he was shocked when I refused. I was a little concerned that I’d not know how to handle it. Last thing I needed to do was wreck a car that wasn’t mine or his and the owner didn’t know I was driving.
Funny thing about what I’d not own, if you had asked me 2-3 years ago I would have put a Prius on that list, now I own one.

Sounds smart to refuse the drive under these conditions. I test drove a Volvo V70R more than ten years ago, at a car-on-ice-skill session arranged by Volvo. 300hp was so fast, it felt way beyond “necessary” for me. Granted, I drove a 30 year old beater then…just figured the pictures have been untouched online for 11 years and Google found them:

I am planning, well, hoping, well, dreaming of being the second owner of a low mileage, pampered, bright red Alfa 4C. It is a TOTALLY impractical car with only enough luggage space for a single bottle of wine, perhaps cushioned by change of sexy lingere for well chosen travel companion, if she doesn’t intend to wear much.
    I want, badly.

Whoa, I’m obviously somewhat excited to read what you snapped up. Currently, all our funds go to fixing the house, our kids and travelling, so our cars need to be dead reliable and frugal. Which they are. The Volvo that I want is currently not within reasonable distance. But…first car I thought of reading the question was this:

I’ve been jonesing for an SRT Challenger since I saw spyshots of them 10 years ago. I still want one. I also have an unhealthy desire for a 500 Abarth, which makes no sense for me as I have kids that I still have to ferry around, and they are getting bigger every month.

It’s outside of my price range, but hopefully not by too much. I want one of these in an unhealthy way. Hauls the kids, luggage, and will rip most cars on the road a new one while remaining completely invisible. Seconded. I also fear that these aren’t going to depreciate enough to comfortably bring them within my grasp. Buying one new is just a bit outside my price range. I could get the loan and afford the payments, but it wouldn’t be comfortable.

Since marriage, having a child, a few brief periods of unemployment, my price range keeps shrinking. At one point in time a 4 year old Corvette was in my price range and I bought it. Of course at that point I was out of college, gainfully employed, and living at home with my parents.
The semi-practical car that I really wish was in my price range now is a CTS-V or maybe even a ATS-V. But, I’ve got about two years more payments on my truck and the wife’s car is next in line for replacement.

’64 1/2 Mustang, 170 six, three-speed. When I was a kid, one of the neighbors had one like this. A couple of times, we went for a drive, and he would let me shift it from the passenger seat, while he worked the clutch. An honest Mustang, without some crate motor, top loader, repro Pony interior, etc.

For the time being, my priority is putting money away to graduate from condo life to home ownership, so I actually have a place to stash spare cars.
I can fit a bike or two in my parking spot with my DD though. Ideally, my next one would be some form of (probably retro) standard – a newer Bonnie or Moto Guzzi V7 is pretty attainable in time. That said, Honda CBR125R’s are easily available for $1500, which is kind of tempting (fun, if you stay off the highway), and I’ve got a friend getting in my head, encouraging me to pick up a heavily depreciated older Goldwing.
As far as cars go, a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a fun, reasonably family-friendly ride (for when that time comes), the rare E63 AMG wagon would be ideal, or I can’t see the Subiyota twins holding value exceptionally well.

I could afford the purchase of several “dream cars” (well, one of them), but I can only dream of appropriate parking/wrenching space, and maintenance.
Short list of kind of affordable but unrealistic cars:
NSU Ro80, Porsche 928, Citroen SM (those got expensive lately), Jaguar XJS, this crossfire Corvette nobody really wants, even nice Bentley from the early 90ies. Oh, and a Smart roadster coupe, because lifestyle garbage that’s fun still today.

I’ve been thinking about that Smart but it still has this awful gearbox so I’m not sure how fun it is, theoretically quite fun, but I’m not sure. Is there way to improve the gearbox?

        nanoop

Citing Oldtimer Praxis from January: “The Smart Roadster is fun – despite of its gearbox. […] Specialists offer various solutions for reducing the gear change duration, and generally speaking, one will adapt rather quickly to the AT’s behaviour. The first lines of this paragraph are still a big compliment, so we’ll repeat it: it’s gigantic fun driving it – despite of the gearbox. ”
My interpretation from this to your question: yes but no.

Is this weird? I think this is weird, but it is exactly what I would get. My wealth going toward keeping it on the road, rather than just buying it.

Same as above, only slightly less “want for reasons” factor.

new car? F-Type, duh. comes with a stick shift this year, hell yeah.
old car? it’s hard to say. cars that might realistically fall into my price range – suggesting that they’re not currently in it – might include an NSX, a Viper, a Supra…..i guess i could afford one of these cars now, if i threw caution and financial planning to the wind, but if decent examples cost in the mid-teens i’d consider one.
not the supra, maybe. low tens or high four figures for the supra.

This is a regular topic of discussion on CNT. My current just-barely-out-of-reach automotive lust objects are early C63 AMGs and E65 Alpina B7s. They’re getting cheaper by the day. Already sub-$30k cars.
