Here in the U.S. we’re about to kick off summer proper with a three-day weekend and a 500-mile race at a place they call the brickyard. The Memorial Day Weekend has been our nation’s official start of summer for decades, but it began as “Decorations Day” shortly after the Civil War as an opportunity for veterans and others to pause and thank those who gave their lives for the Ken Burns documentary.
This year is no different, and I’d like to take the opportunity to ask my country-mates, and those outside the U.S. if you’re planning on doing anything special in celebration. I’m planning a backyard barbecue with plenty of cold beer, some grilled chicken and this amazing black bean with chipolte-honey vinaigrette salad. Holy crap it’s tasty! How about you, are you planning to cook something equally mouthwatering? Or, are you planning on going someplace for the long weekend? If you are, what’ll you be driving?

Replace the passenger-side front wheel bearings on the Merc. The driver’s side took me over 2 hours last night, and it was the one making the racket like I had a mud tire mounted. The passenger side is starting to make some noise now. I should be able to get it done more quickly now that I (sort of) know what I’m doing). Apart from that, if the weather looks amenable, we might visit some folks in the sticks who built a baseball diamond on their 5 acres, so that’ll be fun. We just got a new bike rack for the family truckster that can hold all of the family’s bikes, so we’ll probably go on a ride somewhere on memorial day. There’s been talk of camping, but as far behind as we are on housework with the busyness of the last two weeks, I can’t see that happening.

We’ve already done our cemetery duties (flowers, raking, clean up, etc) so this weekend is nothing but fun – headed to the cabin tonight where we’ll spend all weekend fishing, kayaking, beer drinking and marshmallow roasting. Unfortunately the lake is still too cold for tubing/skiing/swimming.
As far as vehicle, we’ll be driving the Supercrew – Now that our eldest son has gotten a kayak of his own we have too many to fit in the box, so I need to pile the ‘yaks on the snowmobile trailer. I can’t wait! -
This morning I’m doing a demo of a Moto Guzzi Griso and an Aprilia Tuono 1100 just for fun. This afternoon putting braided lines on my motorcycle. Tomorrow driving into the Rockies in my GTI for hiking. Going to be a good one.

I have a box full of drums, shoes, springs and whatnot to re-do the rear brakes on the Trans Am, but I doubt I get to it. Adding to the list of things that the prior owner neglected, I have the strong suspicion that there is a deep groove in the drum worn by the existing shoes since they wont come off and have developed a horrendous scraping noise of late. I can’t pull it off conventionally, so the “easy brake job” is slated to become the “indefinite end demolition job” first.

A spoon, a puller, and a torch will work. Just be patient – it might take a couple of beers

I may have gone stupid when I looked last time, but I swear there was no hole in the backing plate to reach an adjuster. I was in a hurry to get the wheel back on, so I may have missed it.

aahhhh!
mine failed the adjuster and would not come off either. just another reason i detest drum brakes of any kind. ended up ripping the damn thing off and screwing up all the springs and the backing plate. all of which i was going to renew any way. i was almost at that point where i was going to grind a slot in the drum and insert a wedge in the slot with a rather large drift to crack it off(trick learned from forklift repairs) when it two large pry bars and a hammer the size of a small mountain finally caused everything to yield up the desired results.
junk yard parts and a mig welder fixed it again.
a really good reason to have rear disc brakes.

From the cockpit, pretty much an open roadster. It’s a light, quick, rather austere, stiff-riding, tail-happy toy car with no windshield. Interesting, but fairly pointless. Bradley Brownell would absolutely love it. Surprisingly conventional driving dynamics. Hiwever, without the accessory flyscreen, most obvious impression is that the wind blast is horrible, worse than a bike. The sloping hood pushes it all right into your face.

Like every three-day weekend, I plan to loaf around San Francisco and enjoy all the light traffic and plentiful parking, both on the street and on the barstools. Then I’m going to work on Monday for double pay.

This morning it’s Carb Day and Indy Lights on NBCSN as a lunch and snack are packed for this afternoon.
This afternoon heading to National Cemetery in the Queen City of the Ozarks to visit Mom and TheGentlemanFarmer’s final resting places. While there, and definitely not as an afterthought, pay my just respects to the our fallen soldiers.
After dropping off a 1/25 scale Gen 1 VW Type II diecast to Bus_Plunge (received his command call last week to stop by a local vendor and snag it), it’s time to head out to the first legal Street Cruise on old Route 66 since the local city council outlawed “Cruising on Kearney” in the mid 90’s.
Saturday the Mid America Street Rod Nationals during the daylight hours with the Cards/Rockies baseball game in the pm.
Sunday it’s all TV and motorsports: Monaco GP in the wee hours, Indy 500 midday and the Coke 600 to fall asleep by.
Monday, head to the lakeshore with a couple issues of Sports Car Market and Grassroots Motorsports to enjoy a couple peaceful hours while all the touristas head back to the rock they crawled out from under.

I think you mean a 600-mile race at a place called Charlotte Motor Speedway. Seriously though, it’s a great day to watch racing on TV here in the US, which is probably all I’ll be doing. I’ve been on vacation (stay-cation) since last weekend and have been sick with an upper respiratory infection (with fever) the whole time. Hence, nothing on my list of projects has been done. Grrr…
Being able to take in the Monaco GP (8 AM EST), the Indy 500 (Noon), and the Coca-Cola 600 (6:00 PM) on the same day is a rare treat and at least some solace for an otherwise crappy vacation. -
I am going hiking with friends tomorrow. All the rest of the weekend, I will be working on welding projects. Two wheeled ones, specifically.

I’m going to Albuquerque to buy a 1970 240Z. Very low VIN, less than 1500. Prices going bananas these days. This should be a $4,000 car, but it’s far north of there. Hopefully the value continues to climb.

Stay home (except for short jaunts in the ‘B with my dog) and watch the ADAC Zurich 24h race at the Nurburghring ( live stream), PWC at Lime Rock (live stream), Formula One at Monaco, the Coca-Cola 600 at ATL, and Indy.

Going to Winton Racewayin northern Victoria today (Sat) for the historic races, both car and bike (including sidecars). Was thinking of the Shannon’s Nationals series at Philip Island on Sunday but the weather forecast is cold, wet and windy, there isn’t any real shelter there and I have many things to do at home instead.
Monday I will be at work as it isn’t a long weekend here, but there is one coming in two weeks time.-
Back from the races, here is a 1908 MAB with a 27 litre Packard Liberty V12. There were so many interesting cars and bikes there, plus some great racing.
Even push bikes too, has anyone heard of a Swing bike, where the rear wheel also steers, or a Companion bike with two seats side by side?

Here are the bicycles. A neat feature of the Companion is a tube in the centre of the rear cross-tube to allow a single rider to ride the bike solo.

Swing Bike was a fad in U.S. around 1980, IIRC. It’s popularity was tempered by the growing BMX fan base.

Saturday is a graduation party for my youngest, Sunday should be laid back and Monday I’ll be at work. We’re behind on our Cobra build and need to be putting in the hours to get caught up for the Factory Five Racing open house on the 10th and Boxerfest on the 11th.

Not too much car related, but I did just have my graduation ceremony, which is why I haven’t been around these parts lately…
I do have some car news, though. I am now the proud owner of a 2005 Nissan X-Trail XE (2.5L, Manual)! It’s 15 years newer than the SHO, and I look forward to keeping it for many years to come.
I like some of the quirky features it has (heat/cooled cupholders!), and the amount of space behind the rear seats. It also has lockable AWD, which is a feature seldom seen on car-based crossovers.

In Norway, we’ve had a four day weekend with some sort of Christian holiday on thursday and kindergarten and school closed on friday. We went on a mountain bike trip with the kids and a friend’s family. On the way back, my wife got to ride the mountain down again, while the kids and I took the very long way home, to another fjord, around said mountain, and back again to pick her up. The Camry loaded to the brim with two sleeping kids in the back row is not exactly a warmed up and giddy, canyon carving Elise, but I enjoyed the trip:
