Help MPOTD Rise From The Cyber-Ashes

Steve Ducharme’s “Motorcycle Picture of the Day” has been of my favorite bike blogs for a while — a definite daily check. Unfortunately, the powers that be at Blogger (where the site was hosted) determined through some inscrutable, automated Google algorithm that this above-average-quality blog was “spam” and unceremoniously locked the door, sending hundreds, perhaps thousands of great bike profiles into the Internet’s virtual wastebasket. Worse yet, the blog is simply gone, with no way to point readers anywhere or explain what happened. (Steve’s other two less-trafficked bike blogs, 2 Stoke Biker Blog and Project 2X, remain active at Blogger.)
Steve had built up a good-sized following (about half the pageview rate of Hooniverse’s current traffic), and the prospect of starting over from scratch must be discouraging. But he is rebuilding, this time as motorcyclephotooftheday.com, hosted over at WordPress.com. To avoid any future problems, he will be featuring content exclusively shot by him or by other photogs who explicitly provide him with their original images.
I’m posting this notice here on Hooniverse not only to build some traffic for Steve’s renewed effort, but also to clue in any of his existing readership that might be in the dark about his new home. Click over to Steve’s new site, and offer him some encouragement. If you’re a bike guy, you might end up with a habit of checking back every day.

UPDATE: Steve bounced over here to post a comment you can read below. The gist of it is that the URL is still in flux. Be assured that I will edit this post to include the proper address for MPOTD, wherever it eventually lands permanently. – T.

Oh, this is getting added to the ol' RSS right above fuckyeahcarburetors and right below Hooniverse.

Don't forget bikeexif.com, if you don't have it there already.
(Not affiliated & not trying to take anything away from MPOTD; I'm adding them to my RSS feed too!)

BikeEXIF is definitely one of the best.

Indeed. I have had that down for a long time, and its always enjoyable. I especially like the interviews.

Hmm. Am I to believe that Blogger is a less stable platform than WordPress? I only went with Blogger for Roadwork because it seems to get on so well with Google. Did I back the wrong horse?

[ I guess IDC is going to either let me reply to this twice, or not at all…]

That's the dream. Well, the dream is that one day it could pay for itself, but that's aeons away.
Nice to have a hobby, though.

My site costs me about $120/yr, including two domains and unlimited email addresses. After having my regular email address forcibly stripped from me three or four times in the past when I changed providers or internet sites went belly-up, I just consider the ability to control the destiny of my contact information going forward part of my household teleconnection expenses. The webspace part of it is a free bonus. …Although Google Adwords made back $4.80 last quarter! Woot!

So I can't send you stuff to your @compuserve.com account anymore?

So, with a weak pound at the moment, that's like £16billion. Don't know what you're worried about.

Aw man, that's flippin' tragic! I too was a daily visitor though admittedly over the holidays I cut back on my daily blog consumption. This is nasty news to me, thanks for reporting it. Kudos for keeping on keeping on over at wordpress though.

Hi guys. Steve Here from MCPOTD. I can't tell you how much i appreciate the shoutout on here. I really do. Unfortunately I may have zigged when i should have zagged by going strictly WordPress. It's an awesome site and I like it a lot but it has some severe limitations. One being NO Ads. I was wanting to put a few on to offset some costs I'm incurring from all of this. But the only way i can do it is if I self host which isn't expensive but it's a totally different direction (and will probably need yet another new domain since wordpress has grabbed this one and pulling it away is a huge pain. So there will be some more hold-ups. The good news is that I still have all my pics that were on the blog so at a minimum you can expect to see some large libraries being made available but the posts are "probably going to all be toast.
Oh and I'll never trust google again. Yes it was sooo easy since they hosted all three pieces, the e-mail, the blog and the photo's. But the bots will cream you if you screw up. This is why I want to get to my own site and be done with them. Sorry if I sound a little bitter… but… So stay tuned more to come.. Thanks again.

No. Motorcycles are a menace to us grownups on the road.

    1. Black Steelies Avatar

O c'mon, bikers have much more to fear [in the bumbling SUV with an oblivious pilot whose attention is much further vested in an ongoing cell phone conversation than to watch the damn road] than those that deem us "menaces". Those menaces that do happen to ride motorcycles typically get out of the habit quick after they meet a sudden and dim-witted demise.
