Ford to use Lightning name for upcoming electric F-150

It’s been on the way for a while now, and it’s closer than ever. The all-electric Ford F-150 is set to be revealed on May 19th. Before that happens, we have a name for the thing; the F-150 Lightning. And you know what? I’m totally fine with that!

This makes way more sense than Ford calling the Mach-E a Mustang. The Mach-E is a great electric vehicle, but a Mustang it is not. Still, I’m not as up in arms as others about it even if I can understand their sentiments. Here with the F-150 though, the Lightning name is a great fit for the 100% electric truck. It’s always been applied to special versions, and this latest one is rather special indeed. And it’s probably quicker off the line than any Lightning that’s come before it.

So I say bring on the Lightning and let’s see what it can do. Ford will pull back the curtain on May 19th at 9:30 EDT. You can watch them do so on the Ford YouTube channel.

I notice that they did at least drop in the two prior generations of Lightning as the representative for their generations, so that’s nice.

Other than that, I know no one really buys sport trucks anymore, but if they’re going to call it the Lightning (which, yes, fits either way), a sport truck variant would be nice.

My interest centered on that black Bumpside, not the Lightning. I mean, yeah– great use of the technology plus the Lightning name, but this commercial did little more than make me want to hit Craigslist for an old F100.

Not going to lie, it made me miss my own

Nor should I lie, because I don’t need a commercial to prompt me to search for old trucks. I keep several search engine windows open looking for F100s, which I check daily. (And I am admittedly interested in the electric F150.)

Contrastful teaser, with a tiny woman talking instead of the dirty, yet styled cowboy, but still doing the language (“the grit” etc). It really is time, and I’m excited to see how EV pickups will be received.

For now, one positive element of the EV wave to me has been the appearance of new brands, with new approaches, and new ideas. This ad in my local newspaper this past weekend had me all giddy, what a range of brands:

Interesting the selection of the trucks lined up. Conspicuously absent is something from the 53-56 era while the 57-60 probably the least loved era of the F-series, is represented. I was going to be mad though if the original Lightning wasn’t in the line up.

It still amazes me that Ford hasn’t done an EV and called it the Model T to stick it to Tesla

It freaks me out that those trucks are parked and then their headlights randomly come on, with nobody else apparently around.

Ford already has a reputation for spontaneous electrical fires. They want to tempt fate by calling this one Lightning?

There should be all kinds of room to stash batteries in a full sized pickup chassis, I’m interested to see how the numbers fall out, but we all know how EV’s work now, so I don’t think there will be any big surprises. The range degradation while towing will be an interesting thing to watch for. I watched some YouTube channel where they loaded up a trailer behind a Model Y and in an extreme test in the mountains, they managed to use 7x the energy that they would have unloaded, but the power was apparently fantastic.

A friend tows a modest box trailer (he takes his side by side on trips and uses the trailer as a shelter to sleep in) with his Honda Pilot and his range drops under 200 miles, mpg in the low teens. His former Ridgeline did slightly better.

Towing can be tough on any vehicle. Turns out dragging a box through the air is hard.
