Essex White: Ford Escort MkIII Cabriolet

Some of the most common convertible cars you see around in the summertime are various Ford Escort cabrios. The round, ’90s ones are the cheapest kind of droptops on the market, ranging from two grand to three grand usually. They’re not too clean, but the roof goes down.
Slightly below them and maybe above the cheapest Peugeot 205:s and Renault Twingos you find the blockier, ’80s third generation Escorts. A lot of these bear the VIN-identity of a regular hatchback or even a station wagon, having been converted from a German import bodyshell over 20 years ago, when this sort of thing was relatively commonplace. The same goes for E30 cabrios, a lot of them are creative rearranging jobs.

Then again, I’m not saying this exact one is one of those converted convertibles, but it’s a possibility with these ’80s cars. In any case, an “Erika” Escort like this is a cheap way to top-down motoring around these parts. This one at least has decently attractive spoilers, and the wheels are a nice choice.

As insane as it sounds, I like it. I do see some rust peeking out in places.

Essex white would be about right. See Basildon 1988-1994 for further info.
This is definitely a factory-built one. I never did understand why the convertible used the same rear lights as the estate, and I can’t imagine builders of a sawzall’d hatchback taking the trouble to do the same.

My uncle had one in Edinburgh while I was vacationing there. Great little car and so much better than USA products. Thats when I learned European and American Fords are NOT the same

I remember moving to Germany in the 80s and drooling over the XR3ti. Sooo much better looking than the US models.

Somewhere at home I have an ’87 Ford UK full-line brochure, going all the way from the Fiesta to the Escort and Orion (notchback version of the Escort), the Capri, the Sierra, and the Granada. A friend who went home to visit relatives brought it back for me. Yeah, the European Escort was much better than the crapcan we got in the US.

My friend had one for a while long time ago. Sold it ASAP. It was beater and so soft that doors wouldn’t open if there was 4 guys in the car. I don’t think good ones were much better.
