Craigslist: a 1996 Buick Century wagon… oh, it's also a custom-built dually

1996 buick century wagon dually

I ask you to take a moment and simply bask…

Bask in the magnificent glory of the custom-built beast you see above. This is a 1996 Buick Century wagon, which has been given the extra awesome that comes with a set of a dually rear end. The rest of the car is actually completely stock, which means it’s a front-driver powered by a V6 motor. Move your eyes rearward again, however, and it transforms into a one-off mythical beast of a family hauler.

Ladies and Gentlemen… this is the ultimate automotive mullet, and it can be yours for just $2,500.

Here’s the ad:

Here is a very unique ride, a custom 1996 Buick Century station wagon. It has been customized into a dual rear wheel 2 door. Yes, it’s a Dually wagon. Fun car, gets a lot of attention for sure. Had been my Dads car for the last couple years, he just has too many cars so he doesn’t get to drive it enough to keep around. Other than the DRW conversion it’s pretty much a stock Buick. It’s a V6, still front wheel drive. Starts up every time and runs and drives great. $2500 obo. You can call or text me at  (607)624-4953 . Please only contact me if you are serious, not looking for lookie-Lou’s or tire kickers. Thanks.

Feast your eyes on the glory from all of the angles. They even had to alter the placement of the fuel filler to accommodate the Kardashian-grade rear humps.

We need more dually wagons in our lives… this is clear proof of that.

As with most things we discuss on this site, I think the proper question is, "why not?"

Well, you have a half a Buick, half a dually, and you either can drag it all to the junkyard or do something (anything) with it.

So, does that rear end still have a diff? And if it does, is there still a pinion yoke under there spinning about wildly as you drive?

    1. dukeisduke Avatar
      dukeisduke

I'm thinking they just welded a couple of wheels together (the outer one with the spider cut out), with some kind of spacer in between. Which makes me wonder about how long rear wheel bearings last.

      1. dukeisduke Avatar
        dukeisduke

Oh, and tire wear on the outer tires.

      2. Slow_Joe_Crow Avatar

Nope, this generation is FWD only so that is just a twist beam axle with no drivetrain back there.

        1. dukeisduke Avatar
          dukeisduke

Oh, I know that, I just think the extent of their mods was just to weld wheels together and 'glass some flares on. And bondo over the gap between the rear doors and the rear quarters (above the flares).

          FuzzyPlushroom

If the Panhard rod rusts through, the entire rear of the car will swing out far enough to expose both wheels on one side and cover both wheels on the other – without flares.
Ask me how I know this. Go ahead.

Was it me, I'd attach a little spoked wheel to said yoke, and mount a playing card to the underbody.
Then my duelly wagon would sound like a motorcycle.

I am with you on this one. So close to being awesome. Someone needs to buy it and put a huge supercharged v8 poking out of the hood sending power to the back 4 wheels. So close and yet so far.

      1. engineerd Avatar

Would they then be able to advertise it as 4WD?
I'm with you. Though, I think for extra weirdness, maybe a Powerstroke diesel with 12" pipes coming out the roof.

I had a dream last night, not this – but it made it come back to day memory. It was a Volvo that looked like a cross between a Lagonda and a Volvo 960. Only it say four and the doors were like GT doors, but with triangles on top for ease of entry, plus they opened with a bit of a butterfly. In the back, hanging past the rear axle was a red V6 of all things and the gear box was forward of that. In the back the driver's side passenger had awesome controls for everything in the car unrelated to driving, and the head lights were sealed beams with all these knobs everywhere to fine tune everything precisely. Also, lots and lots of chrome, car was brown otherwise.

Uh, how do you get into the rear seat? This is so completely the answer to a question nobody asked. I have to assume a dead dually axle wreaks absolute havoc on handling — while doing nothing to increase load carrying or trailer towing capacities that you couldn't do by other more conventional suspension/tire/wheel upgrades.
