Classic Captions – The 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Edition

1988 Dodge Ad-05 Welcome to the Hooniverse Classic Captions Post, and once again, it’s that time of the week in which this feature appears, so let’s review the premise; I search for images that were used by the car companies in their print advertising or brochures, and it is your job to provide a humorous caption that is some how tied in with the image. This week we have a Mid 80’s K-Car with a late 60’s performance nameplate… 12530287905_b54bbbc53f_b Last time, we had an image of two Florida Couples with a Neo-Classic Fiberglass Replica, and the participation level was a little off, so I have to ask… Is it the image, or is it this feature? The runner-up comment was from a group of nested comments, started by our Lady in Waiting, $kaycog, who submitted this starting salvo: “Would you like a ride in my Romulus? What’s your name? My name is Remus.” This was an obvious attempt to continue on with my suggestion about Star Trek, but it was then followed by PotbellyJoe ❤❤❤❤♡ who cam up with this zinger: “A perfect car for just Roman around…” This was followed by a relative newcomer, 66Mustanger, who added: “I know. He says that every time he Caesar”. Very well done all of you, but there was one comment that was the overall favorite this time… And the winning comment was from another relative newcomer to our little slice of the blogosphere, Neen85, and it went like this: “No my dear this is not an Auburn Speedster but a fiberglass reproduction referred to as the Romulus two” “My Name?” “Bondo” “James Bondo”. I actually didn’t keep the original formatting, but you get the picture. So, congratulations Neen85 on winning last weeks round. It’s now time to take a look at this weeks entry, and it is an image for the 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z, which was really nothing but a 2-door “K” Car. This has the 80’s written all over the image, from the Pink Pastel Pants she is wearing to the green “Members Only” jacket he is wearing. You could almost hear the electro-pop music coming from the club in the background, appropriately named the Balboa Club! This is the hot version of the Daytona, so there is a snarling 174hp “Turbo II” 4-Cylinder engine under the hood, but then again it could have been the very under-powered 2.2L, or even the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6 that would start burning oil in only a matter of months. How very romantic! I know this was nearly the end of the 80’s, but do you think this ad image sold many cars? (You can click here to see the full size image) You have the next five days to come up with a great caption. The editors will deliberate on the merits of each entry, and after contemplating our own caption (Is it weird that I still own a Members Only Jacket?), we will pronounce a winner. So, get to work and create you’re own caption for this rather unusual image. Photo Credit: Old Car Advertising
