Pickup trucks are currently selling in higher numbers than ever before. They are also available in more trims, configurations, and sizes than ever before. But manufacturers always need to stay a step ahead of the trends. Many automakers are speculating that, much like SUVs that used to be almost exclusively body-on-frame but have crossed-over to become just taller cars, the same thing will happen to pickup trucks. This is why many automakers are beginning to introduce new car-based pickups. While our beloved El Caminos and similar vehicles all but disappeared, Honda has had the Ridgeline on the market for some time and Hyundai has confirmed its Santa Cruz for production. While Toyota is the import pickup king, they don’t really have a luxury car-based pickup in their fleet. Yes, you read that right, luxury car-based pickup. It’s really the only automotive niche that’s currently unfilled. Enter Lexus LP 460. Lexus decided not to fuck around with new platforms which will keep costs low and to expedite the product to the market. The engineering team simply extended the wheelbase of the LS sedan, with all of the additional space going into what was the trunk of the sedan. The trunk is then converted into a bed. The result is a much desired quad-cab with a five-foot bed configuration. The power comes from a proven V8 engine which perfectly suits the pickup duty. With rear air-suspension, the load capacity is expected to be around 1000 pounds. We are estimating that the air-suspension and extended wheelbase will allow for 5000 pound towing capacity. As on the sedan, AWD is available. Expect the Lexus LP Concept to be introduced at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Yes this is a spoof story, but this vehicle does exist… It is not a photoshop!
