Submission Thursday: The 1980 Welsh Rally

They used body panels to help the suspension in those days.

One Pro Tip we should have mentioned: if you’re going to send us a submission, please tell us who you are!
This was received by an anonymous emailer in my personal account. So it could be one of you, it could be one of my Facebook friends, or it could be a new stalker friend I haven’t managed to identify yet. Although there has been a white Mustang parked directly outside my apartment window a whole lot lately.
The camerawork in this is classic 1980s; simple, repetitive and not particularly dramatic. We could also say that it’s classic British, for the very same reasons, but that’s not very nice. Nevertheless, it’s worth watching because there are quite a few names sprinkled about that you might recognize. Stig Blomqvist springs to mind. As does Colin McRae.
There is also a vehicle featured called the Opel Ascona. That is close enough to the Opel Asscone that I can’t help but include it. That, and the quote, right at the beginning, that remarks that the Toyota Celica is such a big car, it’s no wonder the driver seems to have trouble man-handling it around the track.
If it was you who sent it to me, feel free to take credit so you may be properly thanked. And next time, give me your name.

Also, an added bonus that I stumbled across while watching this.

I do love the sound of a Ford BDA at full cry.

There really is something about a small engine with a throaty roar that makes my naughty bits tingle.
Please note, this does not include a fart-can exhaust on a Civic.

Agreed. Lotus, Fiat and Alfa Romeo Twin-Cams, BMW's SOHC 4, Lancia's V4 all sing wonderfully when you mash the go pedal. The only modern 4 that can compete with that company is Subaru's Flat 4

Are you leaving out all those old pushrod fours on purpose? Because a Ford 1600 cross-flow makes a sweet, sweet noise.

No, not on purpose. But when I think of Ford, I think of Escorts, driven by Roger Clark and/or various Nordic persons. And when I think of Escorts, I think of the letters B, D and A.

I dunno, I still adore the sound of the VW/Audi 1.8T with a nice exhaust and intake on it. Doesn't sound tinny and whiny like so many do; instead it has a nice throaty rumble.
And that's not a bias because of my car. I have the old 8V version that just doesn't get the same noise.

Toivonen sure has an <s>flamboyant style</s> tail-out aggressive manner of driving. In modern terms, he drives more like Hirvonen than Loeb. I suppose that makes sense since Toivonen and Hirvonen are both from Jyväskylä and probably learned on the same surfaces.

Hirvonen has cleaned up his lines, Jari-matti is still in the slide wide and fast style.

I couldn't remember which one still tortured his tires, thanks for correcting me.

        1. PowerTryp Avatar

You're not incorrect, compared to Loeb, Hirvonen looks like a wild driver I was just mentioning that Jari-matti is even crazyer and far more prone to crashing.

Very cool. I still do not want a Chevette, however.

I saw them open for Rush back in high school.

Yeah, but their stagecraft was nowhere near as exciting as Prawo Jazdy and the Velocity Trumpets.

As much as I love the lunacy that was Group B, this period in rallying history is just as enthralling, in my mind.
