Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet: the ultimate luxury SUV

Source: AutoMailRU

Mercedes has been pushing the boundaries lately with their G-Wagen-based vehicles, and the upcoming “collaboration” with Maybach is no exception. By taking the same mantra as was applied to the S-Class sedan bearing the same Mercedes-Maybach designation, the company is working to infuse an extra dose of luxury (if you can imagine that) into their top-level 4×4 in order to match, or even outclass, competitive SUV offerings like the Bentley Bentayga and the upcoming Rolls Royce whatever-it’ll-be-called.
Enter the G650 Landaulet, a long-wheelbase convertible version of the venerable Mercedes, which will undoubtedly be the most luxurious a G-Wagen ever offered. Hit the jump to read more about this utterly unnecessary, though equally wild, class-topping luxury utility vehicle.

The G-Wagen started life back in 1979 as a military vehicle, but this latest super-extravagant iteration is going to be nothing like that. Rather than transporting troops its purpose will be to transport the ultra-rich, carrying them in a convertible that’s as capable of dropping jaws in Hollywood as it is fording rivers and climbing mountains (neither of which it will ever do).
Motor1 reports the Mercedes-Maybach will go by the G650 Landaulet moniker, placing it at the top of the current G-Wagen food chain above the G65 while denoting its folding softtop out back. As you can see from the screenshots I pulled from the AutoMailRU video, the truck has a serious presence about it. We can deduce that the rear seat, where the most wealthy will likely sit, will have loads of rear legroom. It seems that the second row of seats have been pushed back deep into what is usually cargo space on a standard G, but given this rides on what looks like a longer wheelbase it can afford to lose the storage room. Not that it matters, since anybody driving or being driven in it can easily afford to have another car carrying whatever it is that may need in convoy right behind them.

The rest of the rumored specs seem pretty standard, if you can use the description “standard” for a highest-of-ends Mercedes. Powering the monster will be the Biturbo V12, a monster in its own right, which will likely boast just a bit more oomph than is had in the other Mercedes AMG cars it can be found in. This should push it past 621 HP and 738 lb-ft., but the inevitable increase in weight given the stretched wheelbase and slew of added luxury features may slow it down just a bit.
Motor1 reports that only 99 of the G650 are being built and sold, and with a supposed asking price of roughly $320,000 each. If you need to check your bank account to see if you can afford one they’ll all be sold by then… if they haven’t been already. We should know more as the Geneva Motor Show rolls around in March. For now, hit the link here to go over to Motor1 to oogle the upcoming ultra-luxury Mercedes-Maybach SUV.

For some reason this reminds me that there’s a Laforza on eBay right now. Bidding’s at $2750.

This made the rounds of the speculators yesterday. I want to see some proof that this is an actual concept, and not just a one-off modification of G-wagen (4×4)^2 for some ultra-rich playboy.

Looking at the (4×4)^2’s wheelbase, it looks shorter than the above supposed G650. Perhaps it’s just the running gear and fenders from the (4×4)^2 or maybe it is in fact a one-off…time will tell.

I’m afraid not – an object can’t outclass something else when it has none to begin with.

How much extra for front fender flag masts? Does it come in Military Dictator Green or Tan? This seems like it’ll be the it vehicle for all the most influential tinpot dictators.

I’ve tried to find the official diplomat flag masts for my w126. Not surprising, they’re stupid expensive, and no one makes reproductions. It’s a shame, too, since my car’s color is so close to desert camo.

How exactly do a less usable tailgate and worse sound deadening make it more luxurious?

Think of it less as a car, and more as a rolling display case for people with yuge egos.
