106 XSi vs 205 CTi: Would you want your hot Peugeot closed or open?

peugeots

For our American reader base, these two French trinkets aren’t a sight too common. On the left, the 106 XSi, and on the right, the 205 CTi. Which one tickles your fancy?

If you’re looking for lightweight, hatchback-derived fun, the Peugeots offer it in a simple, inexpensive form. This post shows you these two Helsinki sightings.

The Peugeot 106 came in GTi and Rallye form in its day, but the XSi can be considered as a cheaper alternative to the more coveted hotter hatches. The 1.4-litre engine in this 1995 XSi produced something in the general ballpark of 100 horsepower, and the whole car weighed little more than 800kg. This means you could probably beat it around street corners all day, with it responding with gusto.

A hatch and a tail that would make our hatchback-inclined Ray bush. The rosé colour looks excellent on this, and the badge and wiper delete on the hatch leave the rear end looking deliciously clean.

The white Speedline wheels have been resprayed in later years, and are off another Peugeot, but are a working addition to the looks. I also spy a red-sprayed brake caliber.

The rear wheel couldn’t be much further back, could it?

Speaking of backs, this one declares the model quite clearly in large Peugeot Talbot Sport script. The drop-top 205 with the 1.6 GTi engine was called the CTi, C standing for Cabriolet most likely. I have no idea if the convertible top in this 1989 still holds water, or whether it ever did, but the plastic rear screen has gone opaque a good while ago.

The 205 isn’t too clean, either, but these really hold their own against rust even in our harsh climate. Not that the cabriolet 205 should see winter weather too much. The seats have been covered with the cheapest covers possible, but the Cup wheel inspired alloys do not look too bad, even if the bolts on them are fake as anything.

Both these cars, or rather ones like them can be gotten for 1500-2000 eur. Which one would you take, if a good example came along?

Imagine replacing your vintage clawfoot bathtub with a cardboard box filled with soapy water and you have the approximate structural integrity of a 205 cabriolet. 106 please.

Well, great. Now you've got me interested in a 205 cabriolet. I hope you're happy.

We'll be bidding against each other. I have a thing for flexible flyers.

      Will the water be warm?

The water will not be warm: Peugeot heaters don't last this long.

106 all day long. I've seen what a crashed 205 convertible looks like.

Why do people blank out the plate numbers of the cars the photo is aimed at but not the ones in the background which can still be read. Inquiring minds want to know.

    1. julkinen Avatar

Because those are often humdrum, disinteresting vehicles like the XC90. The other reason is that only a limited amount of care is available, and blanking out 10 plates in a photo would just be too much.

I would go for the 106 too, as a fun driving machine it's just great.
You should know I love convertibles and 205s… and recently I wanted to get a cheap open car for the summer.
I've driven two 205 cabriolets and I just didn't like them… So I ended up buying an open top Twingo!
So as 205's go, I prefer them closed and to be totally honest the 106 is by far more modern and better.

My wife would want the Cabriolet, but I would hold out for the homologation special 106 Rallye.

Has to be a Frenchie Rallye, they were the trick ones. The ones that got to the UK and other nonFrancophone countries were a pastiche.
I had a 205 XS – best handling 205 of the lot. I did have a 16 and 19 GTi as well, the XS was the best thing around town. Modern buzzy engine in a light weight body, vs a rather heavy lump up front

Id take both and mash them together. as in (if the 205 has a better engine and trans, I dont really know these cars) take the oily bits of the CTI(which Im assuming if it wasnt a rag would be a gti) and stick them in the 106 add turbo and suspension, brakes and ther you have it a french ricer, but Im sure it would be fun.

Between those two, I would have the 106. But if the 205 was a "proper" GTI there would be no contest, really. 🙂
Also, I noticed that hum-drum V70 in the background. It's kind of amazing how many of those there are, because that gunmetal grey paintwork with the bright silver bits and pieces was only available on the so-called Titanium edition for the 2004 model year. I bought one a couple of years ago, and suddenly they were absolutely everywhere.

The 106 is a good, honest, zippy beater, but the 205 is a classic, or just about to be one. Got to go 205.

That 106 looks great. Those white wheels remind me of an old pair of tennis shoes – nothing fancy, but comfortable.

Damn the United States and our stupid import laws. If I was Canadian I could have that 106 in my driveway.

You could have a 205 though. They were introduced 3 decades ago.

Yeah, unfortunately they're all 1.6L GTis and not the legendary 1.9s.

Yes I was just looking at 206 gti's to import into Canada. Man they can be had decently cheap and in good shape from the uk.

Don't I know it. I'm in London right now and searching Gumtree every day for stuff that's of import-legal age.

Why would you get them from the UK? Wouldn't a LHD vehicle be much more preferable? The supply is greater too. Take France or Germany for example.
Here's a link to about 1250 Peugeot 206s with at least the GTI engine (~138 hp) for sale in Europe: http://tinyurl.com/mx6up3a Most (~750) are convertibles though. I just realized I've got the exact same engine in my own DD Peugeot.
