2022 Volkswagen GTI: Close… but misses the mark

wanted this one to be really good, and the driving experience of the 2022 Volkswagen GTI is good. The exterior style is nice, the new display screens look great, and the price is still good for what you get here. But the user experience with the infotainment is rather poor… and that is a big issue on a daily basis.

[Disclaimer: VW tossed us the keys to the 2022 GTI and included a tank of fuel.]

My ’15 FoST will need replacing in the next few years. I really hope VW gets these glitches ironed out in time, because I think it’s the best candidate to take up residence in my garage. That is, unless Ford does something amazing and brings in the new European FoST…which is incredibly unlikely.

How about a Civic Si or Integra? Sadly, no hatch with the Si, but the Integra looks like it’ll be hatch only.

I think the Civic Si and Integra 1.5T give up too much power for me. I would feel like I took a demotion. The Integra with the Accord’s 2.0T and a 6-speed would be about right.

I’m rather glad that I bought the Mk7.5 R when I did, because while I like the Mk8’s looks, the interior “switchwork” are a trainwreck.

I prefer the design inside and out of the Mk7 and Mk6 over this new one. Quite honestly, I think this is the most unattractive generation of Golf to date. I’ve always thought the GTI was a handsome head-turner, but no longer.

I don’t know about “to date” (never cared for the Mk. 5), but I definitely agree that this new generation is a step backwards. The Mk. 6 I thought was handsome, if understated. The Mk. 7 dialed up the aggression and sharp edges a bit, but it definitely worked, and it remained a restrained design. This one…mostly I think it’s that the front-end treatment feels pretty overdone. It’s not as shouty as a lot of other cars, so maybe it’s just the whiplash from how clean and tidy previous Golfs have looked, but the headlight and grille treatment on this one are not doing it for me.
