2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe

2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe 013
So I am driving the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe this week… and I wanted to share some First Impressions with you.
First of all, the car looks great in person – even in Gloomy Granpa Blue. Picture this car in silver or black and it would look excellent. One of the only areas I would change is the strip of chrome running along the lower accent line – paint it to match the rest of the car. The muscular haunches and angles all show that this car might just mean some biz-nass… and the 5.5L V8 under the hood proves that biz-nass is indeed the order of the day.
In stark contrast to the exterior, is the luxuriously appointed interior. The front seats are very comfortable, and I don’t need to move them all the way back even with my 6’3″ Dearthair-crushing frame. The rear seats are a different matter, as the back angle is awkward due to the stylish outside lines. Also, unless you are Graverobber – fitting back there will be interesting. (Ha… two of you knocked down a peg in one paragraph!).
The best part of the car is easily the engine. This E550 Coupe is belting out 382 ready and willing ponies. In full automatic mode, the car drives so smoothly yet tap the SPORT button and the throttle response turns nutty – almost TOO hectic. The noise coming out of the back of this car is an excellent sensation for the ears – ranging from a low gurgle to a, well… loud gurgle. It almost reminds me of the exhaust tone coming from a tuned WRX, but more subtle than that.
Mercedes is clearly making classy muscle cars now…
Their cars punch you in the wallet at time of purchase, then in the gut at time of acceleration. I imagine this machine, from a clearly more interesting period in time, was their inspiration:

A simpler, more face-punchingly fun time... also, this was most likely invented by Hoons McSmitty

Where else are you going to find a post about a new E550 right above a post about a clown-organ equipped Cadillacamino?
    Nowhere. There’s where.
Also: at least one of those guys gets a serious throat-punch.

ass… you have me trying to stifle my laughter in my office…
      I didn’t notice the throat punch before…

      #3, #8, and possibly #7 and #9, I’m not sure.
I didn’t notice either, until you mentioned it. Awesome.

I kinda like it in Gloomy Grampa, but it definitely could’ve spent some more time in the door fit department. Those gaps are very un-Benz.

I dig the color too (there was a coupe in that color at the local dealer when I bought some parts), but the thing that bugs me is the little slivers of rear quarter window that don’t roll down. Not to seem ungrateful, since Benz and Bentley are the only manufacturers I can think of that still offer legit two-door hardtops, but why couldn’t they just make the C-pillars thicker?

      1. Braff Avatar

        hmm?
You can roll the front and rear windows all the way down and it looks great that way… could it have been a different model you were peeking at? Or do I need to look closer?

There’s little bitty slivers of glass right next to the C-pillars that, as far as I can tell, don’t roll down like the rest of the side glass. I’m pretty sure all previous M-B coupes beginning with the W112 (except for the first-gen CLK and the C-Class hatchback) could roll all their side windows down.
Having that one little fixed piece just looks hokey, to my eye.

Yeah that does seem a bit silly. You can see the sliver of glass in this pic.

I usually don’t like Mercedes that much, but this is just sexy as all hell. Oochy mama, that is a good looking car.
We just went over that movie at the end in my World Cinema class. How bout that.

Braff you’re right that this is the classy muscle car.
At 50K it’s not cheap, nor the fastest or most powerful.
In fact there’s a lot of things it’s not the best at
But Damnitt you’ll look good not being the best that’s for sure.

At first sight, I didn’t like the new E Class. The more I see it, the more awesome it becomes. Especially the coupe.

Why does it have 2 fog light ring holders in the bumper?
