So awhiles back this olelongrooffan was up in the City of Palms and spotted something previously heard of and only seen in pictures. Yeah, my fellow Hoons this was the first time I had spotted a BMW 600, “The Limousine” if you will. And it dates from 1959, the same age as the Daytona International Speedway and this olelongrooffan. All except a full on side view of it. I can only surmise that in my excitement of spotting one of these out in the wild I was overcome with the awesomeness of it. Yes, BMW Isettas are a dime a dozen compared to one of these two door models.

There were just over 34,800 of these made between 1958 and 1959 just 3,500 of them coming to the United States. Fewer than 200 are estimated to be alive today. Yeah, that is a pretty rare car indeed. I suspect its original purchase price of $1,395.00 won’t even cover the down payment on one these days.

This little motor that could generated 26 horsepower @ 4,500 rpm and managed 50-60 miles per gallon in doing so. But getting to 60 miles per hour was just over 34 seconds. Yeah, a freeway dweller this isn’t but it would be great to tow behind a GMC Motorhome.

And how was this olelongrooffan’s nickname of it, “The Limousine” derived? Well as I was walking around this show I from a distance I thought it was a stand for BMW Isetta over yonder. As I got up closer to and realized what it was, I had to call my cruise bound buddy, TheKenMan, and rub it in to him what he was missing. When I mentioned “59 BMW 600.” his immediate response was, “Yeah, The Limousine. When I was in college back in the day, a buddy had one of those and we would always try and cram as many bodies into it as we could and cruise around town. I wish I had one just like it.” This from a guy who buys a new Buick mini SUV when the run flats on his Mini Countryman need replacing.

And this olelongrooffan seriously doubts any ride as described by TheKenMan would never allow this beauty to achieve its top speed of 65 miles per hour. Little known item….this is supposedly the last BMW model to utilize body on frame construction. Yeah, that bit of information and five bucks will get you a coffee from your favorite barrista.
