Hooniverse Motorsport News: Nurburgring 24 Hour!

While I normally use this space to briefly cover each event from the weekend that most recently evaporated, this week, there was very little motorsport of note, aside from one giant elephant in the room.  A DTM event?  The NASCAR All-Star race?  Indy qualifying?  (Friend of the blog, Graham Rahal starts a respectable 12th)  Moto GP?  None hold a candle, and all pale in comparison to the epic tale of the 2012 ADAC Zurich Nurburgring 24 hour event.

To find out what happened, read on.

A Saturday afternoon stroll through Laguna Seca (during an ALMS race)

Not even a week-long cold and seasonal allergies could keep me away from Laguna Seca.  With tickets in hand (thanks rchen and Alara Racing!), we set sail in the S.S. Popemobile.  Everyone was in a great mood and there was plenty of action on and off the track. The paddock area was jam packed.  It’s surprising that no one got hurt with all the race cars, scooters, service carts, and gawkers swarming like ants.

Think busy ancient Greek market, minus the bleating goats.  Thank goodness there were medics nearby.

Jason Bright Shows Hooniverse Some Love

Brighty's 2012 Team BOC Commodore. Yes, it's relevant.

We’ve talked before about what a gentleman Jason Bright has been to Hooniverse. He’s spent a great deal of time chatting with us, and has been only too open about giving us some insight to the world of racing.  It would be an understatement to say that we’re grateful; one of the main reasons we started Hooniverse was to expand our knowledge, and to facilitate a learning process for both our audience and ourselves, and having a resource like that who we’ve been able to turn to and ask questions has been enormously valuable.

And kinda cool, let’s be honest.

Hooniverse Talks With Graham Rahal

Rather than use this space this week to recant tales of the few racing events that took place this weekend (Audi won the 6 hours of Spa, Bruno Spengler took the DTM victory, Brad Keselowski won a NASCAR race, and Casey Stoner won a Moto GP event), I thought I would give you an up close and personal taste of what it’s like to spend most of the morning and part of the afternoon with the extraordinary racing driver, Graham Rahal.

While I was visiting Graham primarily for the opportunity to drive his phenomenal collection of cars for an upcoming magazine article, we did happen to discuss his day job in between back road rumbles.  While this year has, thus far, not been the most kind to Mr. Rahal, I still regard him as possibly the most underrated American racing driver right now.  Also, after having spent a little time with him, I certainly regard him as an all around genuinely awesome young man.

#SwedeSpeed @2PM EST: Randy Pobst!

If you have ever wondered what it’s like to be shot out of a cannon on a standing start, or what it’s like to use massive turbo lag to your advantage, or what it’s like to outdrag Porsches and Vipers down long straights in a Volvo S60 in the SCCA World Challenge, then this event is for you.

24 Hours of Lemons New England – The Parking Lot

Sometimes the most interesting cars at any car event are right in the parking lot. It was no different at this weekend’s New England Lemons race. There were interesting sports cars, sedans, and trucks. New and old, common (not many pics of those) and unique. Below is a gallery of the cars seen in the parking lot… with a few surprises.

24 Hours of Lemons New England – Behind The Scenes

While wondering aimlessly around the Lemons infield/paddock I started snapping pictures of anything and everything interesting. New Hampshire Motor Speedway has some nice garages which are assigned on first-come-first-serve basis where all the “off-track” action takes place. It is nice to have a clean garage where you’ll need to fix your hoopie but the Lemons teams take it to the next level.

24 Hours of Lemons New England – The Race “Cars”

The 2012 24 Hours of Lemons New England spring race (there is also an October race) is in the books. Follow the Car & Driver blog to get the latest details on Lemons racing written by our sexy little friend Murilee Martin.  I managed to escpape my family for a few hours on Saturday and attended the race. With my limited time I managed to snap some pictures and head back home for my 4:30pm LEGO play-date with my daughter and her friend. Here is the first in a series of Lemons photo-dumps, the race “cars”.

Getting to know Bill Caswell

By now just about everyone has heard of Bill Caswell, the guy who entered the E30 318is he bought on Craigslist for $500 into some rally and did really well. His claim to the automotive fame was, to say, fast and furious, but as with any public-ish figure rumors start flying around fairly quickly. I personally don’t know much at all about Bill, but I did hear a lot of things, many of which were not so good. Brian Driggs, of gearboxmagazine.com, felt the same but he went right to the source.

Brian conducted a very nice interview with of Bill Caswell. He asked all the questions that everyone else did not. His interview shines a lot of light on Bill and who he really is, a true hoon. Have a read. Some of Brian’s sample questions:
