The Museum of Communistic Polish Cars in Krakow

Kamil Kaluski October 24, 2011 Museum Tour

For those that have not figured it out by my weird name, I am Polish. I was born in Poland and came to the United States at the age of ten. Recently, after twenty-five years, I went back to Poland to visit family, old friends, and the country I left behind. I was also looking forward to experiencing some of worst cars ever made which I remembered from my childhood. To my surprise, however, the Polish roads were filled with modern cars commonly seen throughout Europe. What gives?

It turns out that once you give people freedom and an opportunity to prosper one of the first things they buy is cars. Frankly, no one can blame them. During the decades of communistic oppression these people were teased with Western movies which featured cars they could only dream of. With communism overthrown the floodgates of car buying opportunities opened, the Ladas, Skodas, and Fiats were replaced with Volkswagens, Opels, and Toyotas as fast as humanly possible.

This week we will take a closer look at a few selected cars which were available in the communistic Poland between the 1950s and the 1990s. Most of those cars were based on western cars, manufactured under a license. Over the years they were, for the lack of better terms, improved and modernized to some unknown and misunderstood standard. Some were even exported to other communistic countries, including China, to give people who were privileged enough to buy a car there a choice… which was a mind-blowing idea. … Continue Reading

The Cussler Museum: The Back Room

Who Says Carroll's Was The First Cobra?

This olelongrooffan missed Modern Art Monday and, as our beloved tanshanomi is on a self imposed Hooniverse exile it looks like Two Wheel Tuesday is also (hell yeah, he’s still around!) so I thought I would post some images of the “Back Room” captured during my visit to the Cussler Auto Museum while out in Ms. Martin’s hometown this past summer. I blogged about the 50′s excess in the “Front Room” and even was able to squeeze in a Modern Art Monday post here but if my fellow Hoons want to see the “Back Room” you’ll have to make the jump.

New York Times Sunday: Benzes Driven From the Rear

Yes, it’s another New York Times Article, but this time it was brought to our attention by one of our Hooniverse readers, Muthalovin (Thanks Man!). Author Keith Martin paid a visit to the Mercedes Benz Classic Center in Southern California for a day of discovering what are possibly the rarest Mercedes Benz models ever, pre-war rear engined Mercedes-Benz 130 and 170 Cabrio-Limousines, and a mid engined 150 Sport Roadster. Read more after the jump….

“I hate Valentino Rossi:” a trip to the Ducati factory

Blake Z. Rong June 15, 2010 Museum Tour

Two of motorcycling's greatest heroes, in one room.

Any petrolhead worth his salt will gladly inform you that Ducati is the two-wheeled equivalent to Ferrari—the two go hand-in-hand like Federico Fellini movies and pretentious film school dropouts. Both brands are steeped in racing history, exclusivity, and exalted performance. Both brands carry the air of exotic Latin passion that, rest assured, is still a myth. And on my recent trip to Italy I couldn’t possibly pass up a chance to visit the museum and factory in Bologna, Italy, where Ducati has resided since its founding in 1926.

Sorry, no photos allowed at the Ducati brain trust, in case we may pass them off to the Soviets. But there’s plenty of shots from the museum!

Classic Cars International, Antique Auto Museum of Utah… part 2

Jo Schmo April 23, 2010 Museum Tour

Having lived in Utah for 11 years it’s a little sad that I have never heard of this place before now. Sadder yet is the fact that I have visited the industrial cleaning supply store half a block down on at least 3 occasions and FAILED TO NOTICE an effin Studebaker perched on the roof of the damned museum 100 yards down the block. Jo Schmo FAIL for sure. Better late than never I suppose… Anywho, what counts is that I did find it. Click on through to see what I saw. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Classic Cars International, Antique Auto Museum of Utah: Through the eyes of a 3 year old

While Jeff and Mad_Science were swilling expensive champagne and drooling over beautiful french ladies, the Schmo’s were wandering around a dusty museum warehouse full of awesome old cars.  I was originally going to run this as part 2 of my museum tour but excitement got the better of me.  … Continue Reading
