Project Bike SOTU 2018: Bultakenstein

Bultakenstein will be seven years old next month, and if you’ve been following these SOTU updates, you will not be surprised to learn that it is still nowhere near complete. For the last five months, my build-a-motorcycle-from-random-salvage-parts project (along with its little brother, my ’73 Honda CL125S project) has been crammed into one corner of my garage, as the demands of adult life have forced my attention elsewhere. I always feel slightly embarrassed to reveal how excruciatingly slow progress on this has been, but it has always been a back-burner, as-time-allows project. When I first considered this year’s Hooniverse SOTU extravaganza, I was convinced that I had no accomplishments to write about for this past year. However, when I went back and looked at my notes and photos, I realized that between my last SOTU in August 2017 and early May of this year, I did actually make a lot of progress on the frame and engine mounts, while also acquiring additional suspension, engine and body parts.

Project Bike SOTU: Honda CL125S

I got stranded.
Less than a week after this Honda CL125S’s SOTU post last year, the bike developed a high-RPM miss on my commute in to work. It was worse when I took the bike to lunch. It wouldn’t start at all after work. I kicked it and bump-started it with hardly a pop. I gave up and rode home with it on a flatbed. I’d had cycle coverage from AAA for 8 years without using it, so I figured they owed me. Unfortunately, the bike hasn’t been on the road again since. However, I did manage to make some progress this past year.

Last Call: Tokyo To Kansas Edition

Peter Tanshanomi September 10, 2018 Last Call

Yesterday afternoon, I spotted this JDM Nissan President in the local Costco parking lot. It would be a fairly notable sight anywhere in North America, but it is much more remarkable to find in Overland Park, Kansas than it would be in Los Angeles or Seattle. In fact, in over three decades, this is only the second right-hand-drive import I have spotted within the Kansas City metro area. Sure, its basically just an Infiniti Q45, but it is not just the rarity of this version that makes it cooler — the Infiniti version doesn’t have the killer lace window curtains.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

Two Wheel Tuesday: False Neutral Podcast #80 – Looking Back, Looking Forward

This month we talk about things from the past: Eric’s resurection of his old Rumblestrip Radio podcast episodes, and motorcycles in the estate left behind by Garrett’s recently departed riding buddy. We also talk about the future, namely Harley-Davidison’s future, in light of their recent announcement of upcoming models. I have a cold and sound like a robot whale speaking into a toilet bowl.

Two Wheel Tuesday: False Neutral Podcast #79 – Not Quite Doing It

Garrett didn’t quite go to a track day.
Garrett also didn’t quite go on his summer motorcycle trip.
Eric didn’t quite get his electronic ignition installed.
Pete didn’t quite do Smackdab.
We discuss all of these things on this month’s episode, along with our views on Travis Pastrana’s successful recreation of the Caesar’s Palace fountain jump that Evel Knevel didn’t quite complete.

Two Wheel Tuesday: False Neutral Podcast #78 – Time & Money

On the June episode, we discuss matters time and money: Garrett finished his modular helmet shopping and ended up getting what he thinks is the best bang for the buck. Eric got another offer to trade his Mustang for a bike plus cash (this time a Harley FXR), but wasn’t close the deal in time. Pete recollects about the time walked into the Motorcyclist magazine editorial offices unannounced, because the front door just happened to be unlocked. We discuss what activities we have planned for the summer and, finally, we talk about the record breaking lap times at the Isle of Man TT this year.

Two Wheel Tuesday: The False Neutral Podcast #77 – True Confessions

This month, the False Neutral crew discuss a mess of different stuff, a good deal of it involving some level of irrationality. Why does Garrett subscribe to Hot Bike magazine, even though he’s never said anything good about Harleys? Why did he spend countless hours fixing something on his TX750 that wasn’t broken, when he’s trying to turn around and sell it? Why do people resist buying customized vehicles, even if they’re spec’d exactly the way they’d want to build it? Along the way, we discuss Sportsters, Ducatis, and entry-level race bikes, plus a number of other topics.

Two-Wheel Tuesday: The False Neutral Podcast #76 – Just Re-Do It

All three of your hosts are present again this month. We all have workshop progress to report, including the CL125S, Bultakenstein, the TX750, and Eric’s XS400. I discovered the current location of the bike that was the subject of my very first Hooniverse article. We then go on to discuss Yamaha’s E-bikes, Husqvarna Vitpilen 701, and follow up on some old show topics and listener comments.

Two Wheel Tuesday: The False Neutral Podcast #75 – Diamond Jubilee

The False Neutral crew dives into our third year of podcasting with some tragedy (mechanical and human) some comedy, and a slapstick pratfall. We’ve managed to do a bit of work on our bikes, and there’s a whole lot more work to do that we’re still scheming about and planning. We discuss DIY carbon fiber, leaky fuel tanks, low pipes vs high pipes, and the conundrum of disposing of hazardous liquids.

Somebody buy Eric’s Mustang so he can buy a Tuono.

Two Wheel Tuesday: The False Neutral Podcast – “Everything Needs Fixing”

Pete, Eric, and Garrett are all on hand this month. We update you on all the things that need fixing, including Garrett’s dirt bikes, Pete’s house, and Eric’s shoulder. We discuss Harley’s news: a factory closure, X-Games snow hillclimb, and production electric bike announcement. That leads to an examination of Moto-E’s upcoming electric spec class, and we debate the pros and cons of spec class racing in general, before moving on to a variety of other topics. If you’re suffering from cabin fever, share some time with us.
