HCOTY 2016 Nominee: Ryan Tuerck’s GT4586

gt4586hcotylead

Continuing my tradition of nominating cars that I love dearly even though I know they won’t win, Ryan Tuerck’s GT4586 project is my pick for this year’s Hooniversal Car of the Year.

At first glance, it’s a Toyota GT86 with an engine swap and some extra stuff thrown onto it, but it’s Ryan’s choice of hardware that makes this worthy of a nomination. The car’s centerpiece is an F136 FB V8 sourced from a Ferrari 458 Italia and barely contained within the narrow engine bay of the ZN6 chassis. It takes the idea of an engine swap to the very limits of what’s possible and relies on talented and extremely patient builders to make it all work. It’s an awe-inspiring display of creativity and determination, and it was all in the name of hooning. It’s set up as a drift car but it doesn’t have a series to compete in, so it only exists to convert rubber into smoke as effectively as possible whilst shooting flames out of its nose.

Of all the cars I’ve nominated over the years, this one embraces the Hooniverse ethos the most. By far.

Hooniverse Goes to Finali Mondiali 2016

lead

Ferrari’s massive year-end motorsports gathering, the Finali Mondiali (or Ferrari World Finals), came to the United States for the first time at the Daytona International Speedway last weekend. The four day event brought well over one thousand Ferrari owners and their cars, around 140 race cars that are rarely seen outside a Ferrari-sanctioned event, and thousands of other Ferrari fans to the high banks and right turns of the historic track’s road course layout.

Before last weekend, I hardly knew what the Finali Mondiali was and I needed a friend to convince me to even go. Going into the first day, I had no idea what to expect from what I thought was just a huge Ferrari owner’s gathering that would also have some race cars and other things I could never ever afford.

As it turns out – and I’m not exaggerating here, not even in the slightest – it was one of the greatest weekends of my life. Let me show you why.

Quick Pic: Sebastian Vettel is a Hoon

Sebastian Vettel making fresh donuts.

I had the pleasure of attending the Ferrari Finali Mondiali at the Daytona International Speedway this weekend. It’s a huge annual event that Ferrari hosts to celebrate the year’s motorsport successes, run world finals for their various one make customer racing events, show off the XX cars, and give their old F1 cars a chance to stretch their legs. It was a spectacular weekend with (literally) thousands of Ferraris as far as the eye could see. To cap it all off, Ferrari brought out Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen to put on a little smoke show with the 2009 F1 cars.

You’ll be seeing much more from this event throughout the week.

This is BMW’s New Art Car or Something

John Balessari BMW M6 GTLM Art Car #19.

For about 40 years now, BMW has occasionally invited some of the world’s most talented and respected artists to apply their unique style to one of their newest cars. The tradition started in 1975 with a gorgeous BMW 3.0 CSL and a livery that was hand-painted by Alexander Calder. Since then, seventeen other Art Cars have followed. Some were street cars that were only ever on display at museums and others were race cars that saw real competition, but each one was unique and beautiful in its own way.

BMW just revealed the 19th Art Car, a 2017-spec M6 GTLM destined for next year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona with a livery created by John Baldessari, an American conceptual artist with an interesting portfolio. With the exception of the Olafur Eliasson “car”, this is without a doubt the strangest Art Car yet. There’s lots of debate on whether this is a worthy art car and, to quote Turner Motorsport’s Will Turner, whether this is for driving or playing Twister on. The general consensus seems to be very negative towards this car with plenty saying it isn’t art, just a few shapes on an otherwise empty canvas. I’ll explain why the internet got it wrong.
