Meet Your Heroes – 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI Review

As a young and impressionable teen in 2006, the North American launch of the Mk5 Golf GTI was one that captivated me like few other cars had done before. It was a car that was portrayed as having a fun and youthful spirit while still being the more mature choice. If reading Super Street in that era taught me anything, it’s that the possibilities for modifying and/or ruining a car were endless – but this German-engineered hot hatch was supposed to make all of that irrelevant.

After winning my heart, over a decade went by without a chance to experience one and see if my hype for it was justified. A month ago though, I finally got that chance through a Turo rental I found while I was in California. I had four days with it to see how well it’s held up and whether it really could be as great as I was expecting, even in the context of all the progress that’s been made in the industry since then.

BMW Motorsport Releases “Go Like Schnell” Documentary on Their First American Season

BMW fans owe a lot to the 3.0-liter CSL and all the people who drove it to numerous victories around the world. The 2002 may have been their first sports car, but the CSL was their first true in-house race car. It was BMW Motorsport’s first creation and it helped pave the way for all the brilliant sports cars that followed. It’s also, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful car BMW has ever built and its racing success only makes me love it more.

Perhaps what it’s best known for locally is establishing BMW’s presence in North America as well. At a time when Americans still thought the name stood for “British Motor Works”, the company’s reputation depended on the car, a group of engineers and mechanics, and some legendary racers. BMW wasn’t let down. 40 years later, they released a beautiful documentary called GO LIKE SCHNELL which chronicled the wins and losses of their historic 1975 season in America – their very first – and pays tribute to “The Cowboys” who made it all happen.

Now it’s been posted to their YouTube channel and is open for all to see. Run time is about 19 minutes, so sit back, grab a Weißbier, and enjoy the story. Oh and John Hindhaugh of Radio Le Mans narrates, so enjoy that too.

Hooniversal Opinion: 2017 Geneva International Motor Show

The Geneva International Motor Show is a car show for the dreamers. Of all the regular stops on the show circuit, Geneva is always the least practical, the most expensive, but the most spectacular.

Sure, several more family-friendly cars that we’re all more likely to own someday are revealed here too, but it’s always been and will continue to be the place where the very best cars from the world’s greatest manufacturers battle for the coveted spot on your child’s bedroom wall. This year’s show absolutely delivered.

As is tradition, this is the part where your favorite Hooniverse contributors prove that we can’t have nice things. None of us were able to fly out to Geneva, but we can still pass judgments – good and bad – on all the cars making their debut there and offer some expert analysis and insight. About two dozen cars and comments from several hoons are just after the jump, so read what we have to say and chime in for yourself.

BMW Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo Touring – Best Wagon Wednesday Ever?

Amidst all the incredible machinery being revealed at the Geneva Motor Show this week, I’d like to direct your attention to what is clearly the best car there: the BMW Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo Touring. Alpina has a long history of making BMWs prettier and faster and their first G30-based car is only continuing that streak. It’s a prettier, more powerful, and hilariously faster BMW 5 Series Touring and it can’t get any better than that.

Lamborghini’s Ultimate Huracán is Here – Say Hello to the Performante

Lamborghini’s long-awaited high(er)-performance Huracán has finally broken cover at the Genva Motor Show today. It’s probably the first of many super sports cars based on the successful Huracán coupe and with an *alleged* Nürburgring lap time of 6:52, it’s probably faster than any of its V10 or V12-powered predecessors as well.

The formula for the Huracán Performante is more power, less weight, active aero, a reworked chassis, and maybe a bit of clever video editing. Click past the jump for all the details that matter.
