2016 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in Pictures (Part 1)

At about this time last year, I was extremely fortunate to attend Monterey Car Week in California for a third time – a fortune I won’t be able to repeat this year, sadly. But with things gearing up later this week, I figured it would be the right time to finally post some of the “lost” shots I took from the one event that should be mandatory – the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

I’ve covered that incredible event before, but for the first time I had media credentials that let me get closer to the action on track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. It was about the most fun I’ve ever had behind a camera, not least  because it was my first big outing with my new DSLR. They were some of the best shots I’ve ever taken, yet I never published more than a handful here on the ‘verse. Long story short, life got in the way. Big time. I simply lacked the time and energy to sort through thousands of photos and edit the ones I liked best. And by the time I did, Car Week had already been over for nearly a month.

But they’re almost relevant now that Car Week is in full swing again. If I can’t be there to cover it again, I can at least show off what was there last year (most of which will be there again this week) and maybe convince some of you in the area to go check it out.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is, in my humble and biased opinion, the best thing you can do in Monterey during Car Week. There’s history everywhere and it’s alive and in your face. The cars here are dream material and can be worth millions, yet they get thrashed around this track as if they were replaceable (which they sometimes aren’t). It’s simply the best.

I was there for three full days and took over 2,300 pictures, the best of which are past the jump and in a couple other posts coming this week. Enjoy.

Car Bros Tries Out the “One Take” Thing

Greg Kachadurian August 8, 2017 In General

Here at the Hooniverse, we love Matt Farah. We also love Car Bros, so this video of them attempting a Farah-style One Take is relevant to our interests. In what might be their best work yet, they take what’s totally a real Challenger SRT Demon on a quick road test around some nice and straight suburban roads. Because this is Car Bros we’re talking about, it all kind of escalates from there. I won’t spoil anything because it’s absolutely worth a watch. We all got a sensible chuckle out of it and you probably will too.

Project Car SOTU 2017: Hoon Truck Jr.

[Working project title]

It’s barely been two months since I took ownership of the 2002 Ford F-150 I call a childhood hero, so this isn’t going to be as big of a Project Car State of the Union update as some of the other guys here will have. I formally introduced it back in June and covered the 3,300+ mile trip to get it from California to its new home in Georgia, so I recommend starting there if you missed it.

The truth is this truck was maintained very well by its previous owner, my grandfather, and I knew exactly what I was getting as I already had thousands of miles of experience across fifteen years with it. But it’s still a fifteen-year-old truck and not everything is perfect. For its first appearance in our annual PCSOTU, there are a couple of issues I managed to get ironed out and some plans for the future.

Aston Martin Valkyrie – A New Era of Hypercars is Almost Here

Greg Kachadurian July 12, 2017 The News!

You know that one friend of yours who would always have these crazy ideas that you didn’t think they’d ever be able to follow through with? And then one day you find out they were actually being serious? That’s basically what Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing are in the process of doing right now.

What started as the AM-RB 001 and a concept sketch last year has evolved has into nearly complete car that’s every bit as insane as promised. Aston Martin has been pretty open about the development process and they’ve just given us the best look yet at a car that’s about to rewrite the rule book. In this update, a mostly complete interior is shown for the first time and a 95% complete exterior gets detailed.

Normally when concepts get closer to production as the Valkyrie is they get less exciting and more “mainstream”, but the exact opposite is true here. And yes, this is a real production-bound car that’ll be street legal.
