Greg Kachadurian January 8, 2016 The News!

bolt_lead

For the first time in 2016, welcome to the Hooniverse News! After a short break in automotive news, things are already picking up in the new year and it’s great to be back. Some things may change during the new year, but this won’t… unless I think of something else to do. As always, this is a weekly recap of some of the biggest stories in the automotive industry without the fluff or bull. I just throw in a little opinion of mine because I can. This week:

  • Chevrolet’s first real EV is here.

  • The Cruze Hatch is real, gorgeous, and coming to America.

  • Hyundai Ioniq looks to be a serious Prius competitor after all.

  • Too much practicality this week? Have a Pagani.

  • What’s your automotive news?

What Was Your Automotive News for 2015?

Greg Kachadurian December 31, 2015 The News!

whatsyourautomotivenews

As of writing, 2016 is just a dozen hours away. While the world slowly but surely welcomes in the new year, most of us can’t help but look back on the year we’ve had and think about all the moments that defined it for us – both good and bad. Everyone does that at least a little bit because it’s hard not to.

Here at the Hooniverse, we tend to cherish memories as they relate to all things automotive, at least that’s what I’ve noticed since I started in 2011. So rather than bore you to death with riveting automotive news  during a slow week, I figured it would be better for us hoons to share our automotive news for the year instead. It’s the same thing I do at the end of every Hooniverse News now, but this time it’s all you – unless you want to learn about the 2016 Nissan Sentra’s new starting price…

Sound off in the comments and sum up your year of automotive adventures. Thank you all for keeping me around for another year and may your 2016 be blessed with full tanks and green lights. I’ll see you on the other side.

HCOTY Nominee: Panoz Esperante GTR-1 Le Mans Homologation Special

panozHCOTY_gimpsucks

“Homologation Specials” are the best. These are very unique and sometimes very odd road-legal cars that only exist to set up their motorsport counterparts for competition.

That brings us to the car staring you right in the face. When Georgia-based Panoz, LLC wanted to compete with the best the world had to offer at Le Mans and elsewhere, they built the radical Esperante GTR-1 – but they needed to build at least one road legal version before it could go racing. Panoz built two to meet homologation requirements and this is the first and only one left in existence.

This homologation special set them up to race with their homemade brand on the world stage. One of America’s most unique racing programs and arguably the only cool thing to come out of Georgia would never have seen the light of day unless this car was built. Without this car, they never would have been able to take on the world and win*.

Fresh out of its six-month restoration is my Hooniversal Car of the Year Nominee – the 1997 Panoz Esperante GTR-1 Le Mans Homologation Special.

Ride Along in a McLaren P1 GTR at Catalunya – Like a Track Video in Fast Motion

The McLaren P1 is one of the fastest road-going machines money can buy today, but the McLaren P1 GTR is one of the fastest track machines even more money can buy. The P1 GTR exists because McLaren wanted to know what the highly capable P1 could do if they no longer worried about highway safety rules and regulations and just built the fastest, most insane thing possible.

Along with the car comes a P1 GTR Driver Program which allows several lucky and/or brave souls to strap themselves into 986 horsepower and take on some of the world’s finest circuits under professional supervision. That kicked off a few weeks ago at Spain’s fabulous Circuit de Barcelona-Cataluyna with seven P1 GTRs and drivers in attendance. One of those drivers is Alexander West who, fortunately for us, has a YouTube channel freshly stocked with track footage from the program and others.

This video was shot from his Go Pro and shows what is basically a sped up lap of Catalunya. Seriously. If you read the digital speedo carefully on the front straight, you’ll see numbers akin to an F1 car. The car and driver are perfectly in tune and it’s a beautiful thing. He also has another video up which shows more angles and telemetry, but it’s in lower resolution. Both are worth checking out though just so you can appreciate how mental this car is.

Thanks for the tip, Tom!

Catch Blipshift’s Black Flag Friday Sale

Greg Kachadurian November 24, 2015 All Things Hoon

holiday gift pack no text

Our friends at Blipshift are celebrating the holidays properly with their last big blowout of the year. The awesome people behind the driver-friendly clothing and the banner ad ^up there ^ are having a Black Friday sale this week, and unlike the other ones, you won’t need to pack a taser and ignore your family to get in on the action.

For starters, they’re bringing back twenty restomodded designs of past favorites that haven’t been available in the last 6-24 months [update: their new designs are now pictured below]. All twenty shirts will be available at the same time (it’s usually just one shirt at a time) in sizes for him, her, and kids. In addition to the shirts, they’ve also got a new-for-the-season Blipshift shifter ornament to give your tree twenty horsepower plus new designs for stickers, headgear, posters, coasters, and more that will soon be announced on their site. Also new for this year’s sale are two seasonal bundles: The Holiday Party Survival Kit and Track Pack Gift Set.

Only Blipshift can sell you a sweater tee that’s meant to be ugly but still be awesome. That’s included in the Holiday Party Survival Kit (top picture) along with custom Klean Kanteen stainless steel pint cup for spiked eggnog, a set of coasters, shifter ornament, and a pair of stickers. In anticipation for racing season’s return, the Track Pack Gift Set scores you a drawstring sports sack, a carving instructions-printed Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottle (carving racing lines, not turkey), a Stormtech poncho, a $15 Blipshift gift card to use on whatever, and two pairs of corded Laser Lite earplugs for when someone’s LeMons car develops an exhaust leak.

The Blipshift Black Flag Friday Sale starts on Thursday, November 26 at 10:00 PM EST and goes till Monday, November 30 at 11:59 PM EST, so also unlike other Black Friday sales, you have more time to take advantage of it. The list of restomodded shirts and details on special order bonuses will be available on Blipshift’s website closer to the start of the sale. No queuing required. Or fighting.
