True aural pleasure is this 3D/binaural recording of a WEC test

Being at an auto race is an assault on the senses. The sight of a battle for the lead, the smell of burnt dinosaur in the air, and the huge sound that comes with it all is what makes these such special events. Personally, one of my favorite parts of being at a race comes down to the sound of it all. It’s the feel of thousands of revs per minute rattling bones and engines making their voices heard from miles away that keeps me coming back to my favorite races rather than just watching them on TV. It’s hard to describe exactly what makes this experience so wonderful, but in this case a video is worth a few thousand words.

19Bozzy92 has captured that experience on film in a little experiment of his. Using a new 3D/binaural audio recording setup, he attended a practice session for the WEC at Monza and recorded some superb audio. There are only four cars on track during this session so it isn’t the most exciting to watch, but that’s not what this is about. The binaural recording means it’ll sound exactly as it did in real life when you listen on a decent pair of headphones. You can hear the distant drone of cars on complete opposite ends of the track, the ear-splitting roar of an Aston Martin when it’s right in your face, and other great sounds you get from a live track. This video is about the excellent sound, not so much the on track action.

So find your headphones/earbuds and listen up. It’s the very definition of aural pleasure.

Quick Pics: Reunited with an old hero

bmw_m3_gt

BMW is the featured marque at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion taking place this week at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Upwards of seventy BMWs will be on track at some point during the four days of on-track action and several of those were brought out by BMW themselves. Classic race cars that have been seldom seen since being replaced in competition emerged from storage to relive their glory days. One of those cars is an old hero of mine: the BMW M3 GT from the final days of the American Le Mans Series.

I got into ALMS pretty late in the game, only getting to my first race at the 2010 Petit Le Mans. I went in not knowing much other than that I really liked road racing and the BMW M3. Team RLL raced with two beautiful M3 GTs similar to the one pictured. Seeing those cars (and all the others in the 2010 ALMS field, for that matter) fly through the rolling hills of Road Atlanta was a phenomenal sight. It was one of the best experiences of my life, but right at the end, things got really interesting. The leading (I think) Risi Competizione Ferrari F430 GT ran out of fuel with a lap or two to go which allowed one of the BMWs to get just enough points to narrowly clinch the Team and Manufacturers championships for the season. The friend that forced me to attend is about the biggest Ferrari fan on earth. I thought our friendship was over.

Fortunately it wasn’t and we got to see more ALMS races together, including the last one. I would have come back whether BMW had won or not, but seeing this car do so well on my first ALMS race and then continue to kick ass over the next two seasons left a huge impression on me. In a way, this is the car that helped solidify my love for endurance racing and for BMW Motorsports. The car pictured is the 2011 season car, the same one my friend and I got to see race for its final time. I got to see it on track again today. It looks, sounds, and feels exactly how I remember it.

The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award – the ultimate best in show

1932 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A S Sport Cabriolet

In our rich and diverse car culture, there are thousands of car shows that bring some of the best cars from the past and present to the limelight. Among those shows, the most pristine examples of the finest cars on earth are always at the world’s top concours events. The things that can turn up at a proper concours event can bewilder and amaze like nothing else can. Typically those events will crown a best in show to recognize a single car as the most exceptional machine among an already exceptional collection of cars. This year’s Monterey Car Week will have plenty of concours with plenty of best in shows, but one concours event will take that concept to a much higher level.

The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award will be presented at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 19th and it’ll be a literal best of the best show. They’re bringing in six best in shows from top concours events around the world onto the same lawn to compete for the ultimate best in show. They’ll have 23 industry legends on hand who will be charged with the daunting task of picking a single best of the best in show and essentially naming the finest car in the world.

Some details on the six cars in the running for this award are past the jump. They’re phenomenal.
