24 Hours of Le Mans: Some post-qualifying über-geekery

Eric Rood June 12, 2015 Motorsports

Look, you Hooniverse readers know me and know I’m a tad nerdy. And you should, by now, know that I’m a huge fan of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. So when given complete access to the Le Mans timing data—and it’s very good, should you go look at it yourself—I naturally got a bit carried away trying to figure out what to expect when the green flag drops at 3 p.m. French time (9 a.m. ET) on Saturday and what may happen when the dust settles at the same time the next day. Follow the jump to bask in my nerdiness.

Be forewarned: There be charts after ye olde jumpe.

Welcome to another edition of Hooniverse’s look ahead to the weekend in racing. There’s some stock cars and some motorcycles and a bit of open-wheel racing, but really this one’s all about Le Mans. Le Mans, Le Mans, Le Mans. Le Mans.

24 Hours of LeMons: ‘B.F.E. GP’ preview at High Plains Raceway

BFE_GP_Lede

There’s some kind of big race happening in France this coming weekend, but real endurance connoisseurs know that the real action this weekend is in Deer Trail, Colorado, for the 24 Hours of LeMonsB.F.E. GP at High Plains Raceway. Yes, beautiful High Plains is primed for a weekend of pot jokes, drone hunting, and penalties doled out by the one and only Judge Phil at his “home” race well out in the middle of nowhere.

How good will this race be? Of the 49 cars registered, the General Hooptiness Index (GHI) of them is showing at an unbelievable 74.1! This is unbelievable, of course, because I just made that number up. And GHI. I made that up, too. So much for credibility.

Anyway, follow the jump for more literary headdesk than you can possibly handle!

74.1!

24 Hours of LeMons expands internationally; Aussie motorsport doomed

Eric Rood June 1, 2015 All Things Hoon

Camaro_720_LeMons_AUS

The 24 Hours of LeMons announced yesterday that it was expanding its misshapen sphere of influence to the Southern Hemisphere with the launch of 24 Hours of LeMons Australia. Yes, that means LeMons will join the esteemed ranks of Australian motorsports that include V8 SuperCars, the Hyundai Excel Cup, and shredding Holden Ute tires at burnout events because getting your license taken by anti-hoon laws sucks.

MWG_2015

Welcome to still another version of Hooniverse’s weekly guide to who’s racing where this coming weekend. This weekend—Memorial Day weekend in the U.S.—is one of the world’s biggest for race fans. If you feel so compelled and (un)motivated, you can basically sit on your couch starting Sunday morning and taking in race coverage all the way through the evening from three huge races, two of which are considered the biggest in the world. If that doesn’t whet your appetite for racing, there’s a huge variety of racing on and off the racetrack on two and four wheels. Follow the jump fro the rundown.

MWG_2015

Welcome to another edition of Hooniverse’s look ahead to the weekend in racing in the U.S. and around the world. Headlining this weekend is perhaps the most intense of the world’s 24-hour races, a fairly obscure but famous European street race, and qualifying for the world’s biggest one-day race. If that’s not enough, there are plenty of two-wheel, off-road, touring-car, tin-top, and just about everything else running wheel to wheel in the coming days. Make the jump for more informaiton.

Review: 2015 Toyota Prius C

720DSC_9094

[Editor’s note: Toyota lent us the key fob to this little city car for a week with a full tank of gas. We returned it with a full tank and without having attempted to flog it on a racetrack, though we wish we had done so like Jack Baruth did.]

There it is. Look at it, the filthy Internet Car Guy villain: Toyota Prius. Look at how its eye-searing orange paint calls for attention to its driver’s smugness and casual left-lane-blocking indifference. Look at how it wants to save us all by ruining us all.

Look at how I took the key (fob) to this Prius C and drove it to 150 miles from suburban Chicago to Michigan for a 24 Hours of LeMons race because it’s easy to render Internet judgment on a car’s premise; it’s more meaningful to know meet your villain.

So I did. For you. For the Internet. For us all.

24 Hours of LeMons: ‘Real Hoopties of New Jersey’ preview

NJMP2015_Lede

The 24 Hours of LeMons rolls into its third consecutive race weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville for “The Real Hoopties of New Jersey.” NJMP has been on the LeMons calendar since 2011 and has been dominated largely by European cars and also by aggressive driving. For whatever reason, NJMP tends to bring out the crashiest in the local LeMoneers, so expect the LeMons Supreme Court—anchored by Judge Steve McDaniel, who has road-tripped to all three races (Steve is no stranger to masochistic road trips, BTW)—to give no quarter to aggressive racers.

Luckily, mid-week forecasts call for clear skies and pleasant temperatures, so rain may not contribute to the delinquency of those LeMoneers. LeMons will run the longer and faster Thunderbolt course at NJMP again and with “only” 108 entries, perhaps the race will be more pleasant than it was with more crowded affairs last season. Oh, and Hooniverse’s own Kamil Kaluski will be there racing the Park Bench Buick and hopefully not having to write apologies to you, dear Hooniverse readers, from the Penalty Box (above).

Make the jump to see what’s on tap this weekend in Jersey.
