Year of Endurance: 24 Hours of Silverstone

Eric Rood March 29, 2017 Motorsports

As an unabashed fan of endurance racing, I’m eager to share with Hooniverse’s readers previews of all the major endurance races in 2017. The latest installment for the coming weekend is the 24 Hours of Silverstone, the season-opener for the Touring Car Endurance Series. It’s not the high-profile race of a Sebring or Le Mans, but the racing should be good enough to entertain the fan of endurance racing. Let’s take a short look.

24 Hours of LeMons: Sears Pointless 2017 Preview

Remember that part of Truth in 24 where Jason Statham growls “It always rains at Le Mans?” In the 24 Hours of LeMons, that would be “It always rains at Sonoma.” Ok, not really, but LeMons’ spring and winter races at Sonoma regularly seem plagued by rainstorms that make the already-difficult track even more challenging. This weekend’s Sears Pointless at Sonoma Raceway may find rain threatening LeMons West Coast opener, but with a solid crowd and two Hooniverse writers around to guide you through the livestream of the race, this should be a good one.

Review: 3M Rust Preventer Spray

Despite the mild Midwest winter that I’ve enjoyed mostly bottled up in my house writing, I’ve noticed an ever-expanding problem on my daily driver: rust. While I’m not particularly inclined to think twice about it, I intend to keep the car until it ceases to be and would like to preserve it a little. I fully intend to (learn how to) repair it correctly, but I thought I’d see first if this 3M Rust Preventer could help slow the conversion of car to iron oxide.

[Editor’s Note: 3M™ sent us this product to test. We didn’t tell them how rusty our cars already were.]

The Double-LS Swap You’d Expect From Charnal House Racing

You’d be hard-pressed to find a group of enthusiasts who better exemplify Hooniverse’s central mission statement than Charnal House Racing. We’ve shown you their work here before: junkyard aficionado and fiction writer Crab Spirits turned a Honda CBR engine and a Subaru 360 into a “Rolex watch made out of garbage.” The Charnal House crew includes Crab and several others and their most recent epic build, which joins the stable of the now-twin-turbo Geo MetSHO 24 Hours of LeMons racer, is a most-peculiar LS swap. There’s no General Motors in this car at all; instead, their newest drift-car project is a Lincon LS with a turbocharger slapped on the 1UZ-FE V8 from a Lexus LS400. The build has been painstaking—read through the build thread on Ziptied.com for the particulars—but the LS-swapped LS has a running engine at last. That sounds pretty dang good, doesn’t it?

Year of Endurance: 12 Hour of Sebring and 12 Hours of Mugello Previews

Eric Rood March 16, 2017 Motorsports

In my ceaselessly selfish endeavor to follow as many long endurance races in 2017 as possible, let’s take a look at an endurance doubleheader that includes one American icon and one relative newcomer to the game. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship hosts its second round of the season, the 12 Hours of Sebring, at Sebring International Raceway this weekend. That caps the two-race beginning to IMSA’s season in Florida after an exciting 24 Hours of Daytona. In Italy, the Hankook 24H Series holds its own second round, the 12 Hours of Mugello.

Opinion: Your Vape Pen Went Through My Tire And You’re A Nitwit

Eric Rood March 3, 2017 All Things Hoon

I’m not always an angry human being, but after getting raked over the coals to have a fuel pump replaced in my wife’s 2011 Chevy Malibu 10 days ago, I was less than enthused to run over some knob’s errant vape pen with the same Malibu on Wednesday evening. What was normally a four-minute drive to pick up my daughter turned into a four-minute drive with a 15-minute scissor-jack tire change because some genius left a vape pen in the middle of a residential street.

Knowing that I’d be out some money and also knowing the jackass whose vape pen stuck in the sidewall would never be found, I did the only thing I know: Screamed into the void of the internet. Yeah, it’s probably pointless and stupid, but if’s there a better use for CraigsList than pointless and stupid posting, I want nothing to do with it.

The Chevy Ad Campaign Parodies We All Wish We Could Make: ‘Oh, I hate you.’

Eric Rood March 2, 2017 All Things Hoon

Chevy’s ad campaigns of late—plastered all over television and streaming services—feature focus groups of “not actors” being frightened by an aluminum bear cage, trying to identify a Chevy Malibu, and/or describing a Chevy Cruze. They’re all painfully stupid if you’re a car person—Yes, Chevy will build aluminum trucks before too long and no, a debadged Malibu doesn’t look like a Tesla unless your have double corneal damage—and so we’re glad to see this trio of parodies from the Zebra Corner YouTube channel of a wise-cracking man named “Mahk” with a thick Boston accent green-screened into the video, telling the group everything we wish we could.

Rental Car Diagram: What Is it?

Eric Rood February 27, 2017 Mystery Car

While helping load auction items into a rental Kia Sportage after the Lemons of Love fundraiser I attended last weekend, I saw this diagram. I’m pretty sure it’s a simple line diagram meant to document damage by the rental agency, but the juxtaposition of a four-door sedan from circa 1990 on a modern CUV just struck me as absurd for some reason. So what kind of car is this line drawing? My first thought, because I’m sick, was an Eagle Premier, but a longer look makes me think Toyota Camry or maybe Nissan Stanza.

Hooniverse Goes to a Fundraiser with BMW Race Cars, Axe-Throwing, and Flat Bill Riley

If you’ve never been to a 24 Hours of LeMons race, you might not know that most race’s have a charity associated with the event. The charity occasionally affords teams the ability to donate to the charity to get themselves out of an unfortunate penalty while doing some good. It was through one of these races that I met Jill Swanson Peltier, a cancer survivor who founded Lemons of Love to give out care packages to patients undergoing chemotherapy. When LOL held its annual fundraiser—featuring a number of BMW race cars and outdoorsy activities like axe-throwing—last weekend, I decided to check it out and give some money to a good cause.

Hooniverse Friend Duncan Ende to Run a TCR International Series Team

Our good pal, regular podcat guest, and occasional tame racing driver Duncan Ende has cofounded Icarus Racing to fly the American flag in the TCR International Series in 2017. I’ve mentioned the TCR series before here since you can watch all of it for free on the web and I’m pretty excited to see Duncan driving one of Icarus’ two SEAT León TCR cars. This is Duncan’s first foray into touring cars and, if I remember correctly from a conversation with him, the first time he’s ever raced a front-wheel-drive car. Given his range of experience in GT and prototype cars, we think he’ll do just fine. Hopefully, we can talk to him about it throughout the year on The DFL Show and you can bet we’ll be tuned in throughout the TCR calendar.
