The Cammed & Tubbed Podcast: Episode 143 – Anything But Motorcycles W/ Peter Tanshanomi

tanshanomi

The three main characters of our podcast were thrown to the four winds over the course of this last week. Last week, Brad was at an Audi S3 facelift launch and Jason went to SEMA this week. As it were, we had a couple of guests lined up, so Cam and Brad took some one-on-one time with a couple returning guests to just chat it out. First, we’ve got Brad sitting down with Hooniverse’s own Peter Tanshanomi, an excellent bloke who has his own motorcycle podcast “The False Neutral” that runs on Tuesday mornings.

In the second of this week’s podcasts, we have John Cary on to chat with Cam about various goings on. As always, he’s a great guest and he talks a bit of RC, a bit of Porsche, and a bit about his recent adventures with taking his 911 out to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge.  It’s a good listen, and you should check them both out when you get a chance.

Is Ford’s Focus SVT A Performance Bargain?

Bradley Brownell November 3, 2016 Terrible Ideas

1392319198136

From 2001 to 2004, Ford built what is probably the best hot-hatch bargain on the used market right now. The 170 horsepower Focus SVT featured a Zetec engine with a Cosworth-developed aluminum cylinder head, forged connecting rods, higher compression, and various intake/exhaust modifications to bump that up from the stock 130 horses. The engine is a gem, but it was mated to the same 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox that you’d find in a MINI Cooper S, which is one of my favorite FWD boxes. While the powertrain is pretty great, the car’s suspension is where it really shines. With a slightly stiffer rear antiroll bar, lower and stiffer springs, a quicker steering rack, and 17′ alloy wheels with performance rubber (better, more modern performance tires make this car even better to drive. Something like an R888 would be a joy…) promote the lift-off-oversteer feeling that the current Focus and Fiesta ST are known for. It’s a great car to hustle quickly around a track or autocross course, and can make fun and buzzy work of a canyon road. These days 170 horses doesn’t sound all that exciting, but in a car that only weighs about 2500-2700 pounds, it’s not so bad. And they still return mid-20s in highway MPG. Read on to see some examples, and find out how cheap they’ve gotten.

The DFL Show: Episode 24 – Mint 400 Wannabes

img_9537

On this week’s episode, Duncan and Eric are out trick-or-treating with their kids, so the assylum is left to the inmates as Brad, Pat, and Stef ramble about sports cars and other stuff for a while.

We’re giving away a pair of Hunziker Design driving shoes, so listen to find out how you can win yourself a sweet sweet pair of shoes.

In this episode we discuss Sebastian’s cursing fits, Superformula’s exciting season finale, Asian Le Mans exciting season premier, Dovi winning in MotoGP, Audi leaving LMP1, Volkswagen leaving WRC, Porsche doubling down on sports cars with a mid-engine GTE car, Dale Earnhardt and driver safety, Simon Pagenaud’s Jean Girard-esque desires, Flying Lizard running a pair of Cayman GT4s, Porsche’s Sound Nacht, Red Bull’s Mint 400 video, some IndyCar silly-season moves, and a few other pieces of random discussion that pop into our heads.

We don’t have any listener questions, and we don’t have a quiz, so this is a relatively short episode. Thanks for listening, we appreciate you!

The Hooniverse Motorsport News For October 31, 2016

Bradley Brownell October 31, 2016 Motorsports

This Weekend there was actually a surprising amount of racing worldwide, even as the season ends. Well, some seasons are ending, meanwhile the Asian Le Mans Series had their season opener at the 4 hours of Zhuhai. Formula 1 is winding down, but hasn’t named a victor yet. Super Formula had a season-ending championship victor, and the points were absolutely crazy, we’ll talk about that later. NASCAR has another Chase contender after a wacky Martinsville race. WRC saw Ogier put a stamp on his already-clinched championship with a stellar win. MotoGP saw a guy win who hadn’t seen the top step of the podium since 2009. We have spy-video of a mid-engine Porsche GTE fighter. Oh, and AUDI IS LEAVING WEC!!!!!

Read along to see what good stuff happened this weekend. Summer is winding down a bit, and the racing is running to the end of the championships, so we’ll do our best to help keep your finger on the pulse. Just be aware of the fact that this post is filled with spoilers. Giant carbon-fiber, multi-element, DRS-equipped, Gurney-flapped, Spoilers! Oh, and in case you missed it, I am also hosting a new motorsport podcast these days…

The Cammed & Tubbed Podcast: Episode 141 – Emojion W/ Kevin McCauley

kervan

This week we finally have the Kevin McCauley episode up. Jason was unavailable that day, and Cam’s audio recorder crashed, so we were forced to cobble together what we could from over 2 hours of discussion, and we came up with this short 20 minute one-on-one between Brad and Kevin. They are both verifiable Porsche nuts, and we are there to talk about Kevin’s new AutoMoji sticker pack for ios10. With some tweaks to his design Porsche decided that his app could continue, so that is an update since we recorded this.

The Cammed and Tubbed Podcast – Emojion with Kevin McCauley

In our second episode this week, we have another listener questions episode with Brad, Cam, and Jason. Cam is going to grow up to be the Crazy Cat Lady Of Mazda 2s.

Quick Pic – Cat Got Your Crown?

Bradley Brownell October 27, 2016 Quick Pics

I was in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina yesterday to drive the newly facelifted Audi S3. You’ll get a full review shortly, but for now, here’s a quick pic. The mural caught my eye, and we had to pull over to snap a shot. I loved the pre-LCI S3, and the new one is more of the same, plus a touch more power, some neat tech and a new Quattro system. It’s hard to beat. This mural cat is giving the S3 the crown for best compact luxury sport sedan, as judged by me and the cat, I guess. Anyway, read more about it here on Hooniverse coming soon.

What Audi’s LMP1 Program Means To Me

14718874_10100487768970979_4392168374532230858_n

Okay, so maybe Audi pulling out of LMP1 isn’t the world’s biggest surprise, but I woke up Wednesday morning to the abrupt and looming closure of the program that has defined high-level sports car racing for nearly two decades. For eighteen seasons, Audi has been running one of the most professional teams with world-class drivers, stellar engineers, and boundary-pushing cars. I am nearly 30 years old (next Summer), and I have never watched a season of racing in which Audi was not at the forefront of technology, and at the very least within shouting distance of the overall victory at Le Mans. The world of sports racing prototypes changed yesterday morning, and the ripple effect will be mega.

This weekend had some pretty good racing, but as the season winds down we have fewer and fewer series to really worry about following. Formula 1 was in Austin, plus ELMS, MotoGP, NASCAR, and VLN. That’s pretty much all of it.

The Cammed & Tubbed Podcast: Episode 139 – How Dead Their Friends Were

ct-139

We’re back to a two-episode schedule, and hopefully we’ll have a few bonus episodes in the next few weeks. We were going to attempt to have a guest on this episode, but it fell through at the last minute, and ended up just being Brad, Cam, and Jason, but that’s alright because we had plenty to talk about.

In this episode, we jump into the 3D’s, Cam has some pictures of an M5 that hasn’t been launched yet, Jason talks about MPG Track Day some more, Brad went on a drive in his 912E, and Cam had a few drinks with former US Poet Laureate Billy Collins. All in all, it turned out to be a good episode.

The Cammed and Tubbed Podcast – How Dead Their Friends Were

In the second episode, Manuel Carrillo, III is back to help us answer some listener questions for a bit. We discuss the Fusion Sport, Rally versions of normal cars, the best way to learn to drive manual (from Manuel), Tuning for feel over power, Post apocalyptic picks, and more gushing about the Nissan Sentra SR Turbo.
