HCOTY 2016 Nominee: Porsche’s First Le Mans Winner

hcoty-2016-356sl

You didn’t think we’d make it through the 2016 HCOTY nomination process without seeing a Porsche represented by your resident Porsche nerd, did you? While my initial idea (Leh Keen’s Safari 911) was stolen by my Cammed & Tubbed co-host, Mister Jason See-Oh-Double-Enn Connor, I came up with a second, even better, Porsche to nominate. Feast your eyes upon the very first factory-entered Porsche to ever win its class at Le Mans, way back in 1951. The vintage racer turned Pebble Beach honoree, 1949 Porsche 356SL. It shouldn’t surprise any of you that I’m nominating this car, I am absolutely enamored with the details of this car, and the stellar restoration that was committed over the last 36 months or so. Rod Emory did a fabulous job restoring this car, and it deserves your votes. Read on for more.

Weekend Viewing: Build Yourself A Maxton Rollerskate For Christmas

Bradley Brownell December 24, 2016 Hoonivercinema

maxton-rollerskate-build-video

If you haven’t been following MotorWeek’s YouTube channel, you’re really missing out. Aside from the modern car reviews and news, they’re digging through their decades of archives to pull out some gems for our viewing pleasure. Some of the vintage reviews are brilliant, I’ve been a fan from the start. Over the last week, however, they’ve posted this series in five parts, a how-to video on Pat Goss putting together a Maxton Rollerskate “component car”. It’s really a great way to spend an afternoon watching this mini-series, and then searching ebay for a complete car, or even an incomplete kit. I’ve always wanted a Maxton, and this video series doesn’t help that desire. Maxton quoted a full build time for someone with ordinary tools to take just 50 hours. For the purposes of this build, they’ve boiled it down to just half an hour. Check all five parts out after the jump.

The Cammed & Tubbed Podcast: Episode 157 – Imperial Shuttle Buyer’s Guide

ct-graphic

This week we’ve got Cam, Brad, and Jason sitting around the microphones reminiscing as 2016 winds to a close. We’ve got one more week of shows for the year, and we’re ready to say goodbye to a year that has been interesting to say the least. We kick off the episode by bringing back The Three D’s for a one-off appearance as Brad has something on his desk, Jason is drinking a beer, and Cam had some music he liked this week.

Beyond that we discuss Rogue One (an excellent film, no spoilers), Jason recounts what it’s like to drive a C1 Corvette, our ideal tree-hauler, and a “custom” Porsche 356 that Justin Bieber built. This was a fun episode, and hope to close out 2016 with a bang next week! Thanks for listening!

The Cammed and Tubbed Podcast – Imperial Shuttle Buyer’s Guide

In our second episode of the week, Question Tuesday, it starts out as the three of us all on the call, but Cam drops out a few minutes in with internet issues. He’s getting a T1 line installed in his new house so he can *hack into the mainframe* every week, so hopefully this will never happen again. That said, Brad and Jason had a ton of fun answering your questions. Thank you for being great listeners, and thanks for asking the questions every week!

Miata Clubman Amalgam Makes Perfect Sense

15622286_1253799851329473_1789292921692766304_n

One ambitious custom car builder decided to mix a Clubman shell with a running but grotty Miata to build a monster that somehow actually does work quite well. It’s a little low for my tastes, but giant flares on a tiny body are never a bad thing. With a cutting wheel and a welder, industrious young enthusiasts can build pretty much anything in their garages, and this car just proves what can be done if you’ve got time, money, knowledge, space, and ambition in equal measures. I always seem to be lacking at least one of those at any given moment, and would never be able to finish a project like this. Click through to see some more photos of this awesome.

The DFL Show: Episode 31 – NASCAR or Adult Film Star?

16-laser-racing-bmw-australia-launch-jsp-078

This week on the DFL show we have Brad, Pat, Stef, Eric, and Joel, which makes for some excellent conversation. We have a ton to talk about, even though the racing season is pretty much over. Don’t worry, though, because we’re only a couple of weeks away from IMSA’s pre-season test, and a couple weeks after that is the Daytona 24, so we won’t have much downtime. The only race of any note this weekend was the Gulf 12 Hours, and Eric has a quick report from that event.

After that, we have some Audi LMP1 news, a bit of F1, some NASCAR title sponsor news, Indycar, WEC’s new regulations, IMSA’s new regulations, DTM schedule clash with Le Mans, And some Aussie Supercars news. Pat says if the Merc seat doesn’t go to Bottas, he’ll eat Stef’s old jar of Vegemite (fingers crossed they hire Wehrlein)! We actually have a few listener questions, plus a listener-submitted game we’re lovingly calling “NASCAR or Porn Star” (thanks Bill!), then we give away only one award this week, and leave to celebrate Christmas. Enjoy!

The DFL Show – NASCAR Or Adult Film Star?

We also have a special recording from Joel, who interviewed a couple drivers you may have heard of, who will be competing in the 12 hours of Bathurst in a BMW M6 (pictured above). Go check that out if you have a moment!

Hooniverse Motorsport News For December 19th, 2016

Bradley Brownell December 19, 2016 Motorsports

audi2017

This was another week without much racing going on. There was a race in Abu Dhabi on Saturday for GT cars and prototypes called the Gulf 12 Hours, but it wasn’t broadcast in video anywhere, so nobody was able to watch it. There is still a bunch of news for the week, and a whole lot of great videos to check out, so be sure to click through to see everything and learn what you’ve missed. The only place to get all of your weekly motorsport news in just one post.

Read along to see what good stuff happened this weekend. Summer is winding down a bit, and the racing is running to the end of the championships, so we’ll do our best to help keep your finger on the pulse. Just be aware of the fact that this post is filled with spoilers. Giant carbon-fiber, multi-element, DRS-equipped, Gurney-flapped, Spoilers! Oh, and in case you missed it, I am also hosting a new motorsport podcast these days…

The Cammed & Tubbed Podcast: Episode 155 – Prowler Trailer

ct-155

This week on the Cammed & Tubbed podcast, we’ve got Jason back from Hawaii to discuss stuff with Cam and Brad. The year is winding down, so it’s time to talk about Car of the Year stuff, and our end of year episode. Brad had some 912E project updates. Cam moved his Mustang into the new garage, and dealt with some winter driving. Brad berates Hooniverse News Editor Greg for not diving in face first to a country-wide road trip, while Cam and Jason try to get him to spend thousands of dollars in prep work. You’ll probably enjoy it, so go listen already!

The next episode is our typical Question Tuesday episode, this one is just Cam and Brad this week. It continues to boggle our collective minds that we get so many great questions from all of our excellent listeners. Keep sending them along, we love answering them. Thanks for playing the game with us!

The DFL Show: Episode 29 – Three Kumquats

m16_5988

This week it’s just Eric, Pat, and Stef, but it was still a great, if a little non-sequiter, episode. Some quick discussion of the 12 hours of Sepang, a whole lot of news, A CUSTOM MADLIBS, Formula 1 stuff, NASCAR gets a new presenting sponsor, a bunch of IndyCar, WEC, IMSA, PWC, DTM, and other sports car news.

Then we have some listener questions, a bit of our weekly awards, and some brief discussion of what’s coming up this weekend (not much).

HCOTY Nomination: Jaguar XKSS (No, The Old One!)

hcoty-2016-jaguar-xkss

Okay, so you can *sorta* buy a new one of these from Jaguar, but not really. Technically they are building a continuation of the original 16 XKSS built in 1957, as nine chassis were burnt in a factory fire. So really you’re just buying a 1957 car in 2016. Or a replica? However you want to define it, the new XKSS that Jaguar is building at a million a pop does not violate “The Dealership Directive“, mostly because I made the rules and I say it doesn’t.

Anyway, read on to see TEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR THE XKSS AS HOONIVERSAL CAR OF THE YEAR!

Hooniverse Motorsport News For December 12, 2016

Bradley Brownell December 12, 2016 Motorsports

There was a whopping ONE race this weekend that was really worth talking about. The 12 Hour endurance race for sports cars in Sepang, Malaysia. Honestly, that was a really fun race to watch, and it makes up for pretty much every other series having ended for the season, but it’s still a bit disappointing to only have one single race this weekend to talk about. In any case, there was a ton of news to talk about, and I’ve dug up quite a few YouTube videos for you to check out as well. So, maybe click the jump, this one will be shorter than usual…
