Last Call- Not So Smart Phones Edition

Text Alert

These days our lives are filled with more and more opportunity for distraction. Texting while driving is one of the worst, as this PSA in crumpled metal attests.

There are just a few things that get me bent.
    This is one.
Studies have shown texting puts the driver into a state that is comparable to a legally drunk driver.
At least the drunk is trying to drive.

Literally get you bent, if you have the misfortune of being on the same street as a texting driver.

If this is for real, it is the saddest thing I have heard in a while.

That image was taken from a short documentary called "It Can Wait", and the only fake part is what was shopped onto the sign. I don't remember off the top of my head, but it was something trivial like "where r u?"

As the son of a 95 year old family owned auto body shop, I safely endorse this message. Actually, no I don't. Hang up you fools.

If I owned a Citroen and someone hit it while texting, they'd have somehow suffered permanent brain damage and possibly bled out before anyone else got to the scene.

I saw a lady driving and talking on her phone the other day, and it seemed that driving was a distraction to her conversation. Unreal.

As much as I despise texting while driving I'd have to reject the halo and confess that I have occasionally done so myself. It's stupid, usually unnecessary and undoubtedly dangerous. But sometimes you end up doing stupid things, and in an even tinier fraction of sometimes it ends really bad.

I've been very tempted, weekly, to spook someone enough to freak out when I see the looking ahead-looking down-looking ahead-looking down for a while-quick glance ahead…et cetera. I don't want them to crash, necessarily, but to be surprised enough that they don't do this shit for at least the rest of the day.
Your Facebonk is NOT that important. Neither is the phone call you're on…
Not looking at mirrors, not doing anything other than being an almost passive passenger, using the lane marker bumpies to know when to look up.
    This. Pisses. Me. Off.
I used to drive for a living. Driving is inherently dangerous…the human body was not meant to have forces put on it by speeds higher than we can reach on foot, and even then, top speed into a tree/large rock is gonna hurt.
However, people are stupid. Unfortunately, to a degree at least, 'safer' automobiles encourage this kind of behaviour. Unfortunate, this, rewarding the lowest-common-denominator.

I don't understand how this is still so prevalent. Yeah, I've texted while driving before. It was 5 years ago, shortly after I got a phone I could text on, and before there was a huge campaign against it. As I was trying to type I realized I wasn't focused at all on the road. I haven't done it since, with the rare exception of a short response while sitting stopped at a red light that I know is a long light.
I don't know how people can do it and not understand just how distracted from driving they are. And if they do understand and keep doing it, I don't understand that decision at all.

        Re-read my final paragraph…
        However, people are stupid.
