Fastback Friday – 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 2

These HDR-laden photos depict a 1969 Mercury Cyclone for sale in the Osthrobothnian region of Finland. Yeah, it’s all wide open fields and straight roads, ones you need fat rubber on and steering movements are restricted to passing manouevres. Plant your foot and dodge the semi-trailers, and stop at an ABC service station to chew the fat every now and then.

For some reason, this hand-built NASCAR homologation special has swam over to our soil. It’s been in the country since the late ’80s, but appears to be at least in alright condition and has gone through a lot of performance modifications. The “Cale Yarborough Special” dubbed Long Nose Cyclone was only built in 1969, with the production number a lowly 351, of which there are 30 surviving cars left. I don’t doubt any of these claims, since I read them all from the sales ad. And since everything important on it is written in all caps, it’s pretty easy to understand.

The Cyclone, with its Rick Toombs -built Robert Pond Motorsport 427 engine with Edelbrock heads has been dynoed at 635 hp and 901Nm. Everything on it is said to be brand new, even the electrics, and the original reconditioned powertrain will follow it in a wooden box in case one would be willing to ditch the current setup. The old works have also been overhauled, so it should in principle be plug and play. Right now, it’s hand-rowed, with a Tremec TKO 600 trans.

In the end, it all boils down to the asking price of 85 000 eur or a cool 115 700 USD. The word is the car has had a lot more than that spent on it, and it’s been with the latest owner for seven years. It definitely looks cool, and fits the Fastback Friday post series better than anything I’ve posted for ages.

The ad for the Cyclone Spoiler 2 can be seen here (mostly in Finnish save for the brand names)

After nearly 30 years of marriage to the same woman, WHAT and WHY is that thing in my shorts?… I could only dream of daily driving that thru the streets of Daytona Beach…. I'm just thinking of course…not sure Mama would approve that impulse..

Although I may be mistaken, is that a Ford Talledega grille on that Cyclone? It looks alot different than this one.

Wow. Mmmm…. 3am, cool June night, sun is coming up, going down Highway 27, get to that spot where the road turns into an emergency airstrip and stomp on it….

Bet it would breathe a lot better without those nasty shop-vac hoses on the intake.

I love that machine and want to have car-babies with it, dragon style. Also, I've just remembered how much HDR photography annoys me.
