Regular Cars asks “Which Subaru is Best Subaru?”

It’s a simple question, and Mr. Regular is on site to ask it. He’s in attendance at a Subaru car show and he’s on a quest to determine which is a prime example of Fuji Heavy Industries finest. Along the way he finds some …crap. But he also finds a few gems, including the delightful Brat with its perfectly plaid seats.

      Why such a long hood on a rear engined car? Is that all frunk? Seems to me the extra weight would make this thing less sporty than a normal 360.

        Your feet are probably just behind the headlights. You can scale down the car and engine, but not the driver.

    My theory.

    Subarus are essentially dollar store Audis.
    Both still market their old rallye successes on their halo cars, while actually making fairly boring cars that are not that great to drive, blow up once in a while and are often a bitch to wrench on, courtesy of their unique drivetrain layouts.

      You’ve accurately described the Subaru that gave birth to my (horrible) ’05 Legacy GT. In the years since, they’ve gone from trading on their rally heritage to creating a brand rooted in love, reliability and safety. Their growing popularity proves the wisdom of this, even if the product still lacks the engineered-in reliability they lay claim to. It’s funny to me how many non-car people are die hard Subie fans. Subaru has become the Apple of the automotive world.

        Given how how much of apples brand appeal is rooted in a unified, clean design language and a “premium” user experience, i’d say Audi is actually way closer to being the Apple of the car world than Subaru.

        Who am I kidding though, its Tesla. A Tesla is to non gearheads what a Mac is to non gadgetheads.
        Cool and flashy and new with its own high priest and so expensive that you’ll never own one to find the hidden warts. In short, it’s aspirational.
