The DFL Show: Episode 76 – The Pass

Bradley Brownell October 26, 2017 Hooniverse Podcast, Motorsports 3 Comments

Formula 1 was in Austin and there was a pass that Brad thought should have been legal, Pat disagreed. Formula 1 continues to be dumb. Joel is back to the show for the first time in a long time, so we’re very glad to have him on the mic. He’s been all over the world, and driven some really rad stuff. There was a new Honda prototype launched during the show that turned out to be the Sports EV concept. We had a good time, hopefully you will, too.

Haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but at first I thought the pass was fine, on the basis that Kimi had left a lot of room and Max could easily have kept 2 wheels on and been ok. But looking at the “all angles” video that F1 posted, it seems Kimi only left room after he took evasive action, and Max cut the corner in much more than I had thought.

On the other hand, I don’t think anyone else was penalised for it and I saw a screen shot of one of the Renaults I think passing a Force India that may even have been the same corner – the shape of it invites cutting. If they are not going to enforce track limits, including running wide on exit, it is a bit of a joke.

They could use a similar system to V8 Supercars where they monitor curb cuts through the chicanes at the Gold Coast and Adelaide, using sensors on the track and one on the car to monitor how far over the car is. They get a few allowances, then a warning, then a drive-through. Works well.

Or racing driver think – if it’s faster, do it. How hard can it be (enforcing things)
