Last Call: The Last Whimsy Edition

While he did assume a controlling interest in the extremely lucrative candy enterprise, Charlie ultimately had to turn down Willy Wonka’s offer to move to the factory grounds as the CEO’s house had but only a one car garage, and Charlie was planning to use his new-found fortune to amass a huge collection of epic whips.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day.  It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

I’m not generally a fan of these in “normal” colors, and this has to be one of the ugliest things ever to sport the blue & white roundel, of any shape. The black center stripe is an especially foul touch.

    Apologies to all.

Dang it! I just got back from the store and forgot to get eye bleach…

Unfortunately not the sort of “golden ticket” we were lead to think about above…it’s amazing how much taste can be different between people.

The black center stripe is probably a solution to the wrap not being available in a wide enough size to avoid seams

I was just reading about the Tam O’Shanter Inn, which introduced me to this “Storybook” style of architecture (and was a frequent haunt of Walt Disney’s). Unfortunately someone re-did the roof and cheaped out, so today it’s more conventional looking.

A local carpenter built this in our village’s main playground:

I can’t really stop looking at it when I’m there with my kids. Stuff I build isn’t perpendicular with right angles either…but that isn’t for lack of trying, cough.

That just looks like building and drinking shouldn’t be mixed.

You should get into wooden boat building! Nothing is straight, level or plumb, and seldom square! It just needs to be symmetrical about one vertical plane is all, and even then there’s allowable exceptions.

Absolutely true! Why, the very word “Junk” comes from boat building https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c1fa28582286424ac59d37d6dff215a663ab9be3152ab114096abed55d9294fd.jpg

            Dang, but…will it float?

There are various (probably apocryphal) stories of journalists getting their employers to agree to pay to ship “just my old junk” back from Hong Kong, only to discover that it’s over 30 feet long and seagoing…

I literally lived right down the street from the Tam in Atwater Village and as such, my significant other and I are married in the eyes of the Lawry’s Corporation. Since you got gifts for your birthday and your anniversary, of course, and we’d be damned if we missed out on that jar of seasoned pepper.

Third oldest operating restaurant in Los Angeles, you know…

Created for North America’s expanding interstate system, the Ford Gas Turbine experimental transporter debuted in 1964, and was nicked-named “Big Red.” The towering fiberglass cab dwarfed anything on the highways, and the corrugated panels with skirted trailers helped to cut down air turbulence. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/38b6d3dcd7d5c7fb69474098064133f8e8a10ba60957e58f19f8a6edfa4e2e5b.jpg

After years of budget cuts, that have left entire communities police-less, a government review is trying to rearrange police priorities. They just presented some suggestions, the most interesting being to entirely abandon the part of the police (“utrykningspolitiet”) that does speed controls (“fartskontroll”, no gas involved). These reviews tend to suggest something extreme so that politicians can say: “But we didn’t do that“, but the overall direction tends to be true.

As a thought experiment: Do you guys think that throwing away laser guns and red flash lights would unleash pure driving anarchy? Or do ubiquitous dashcams create some sort of social cohesion and self-control so police controls become unnecessary?

In the UK actual traffic police have become rarer and rarer as automatic speed cameras become more and more common. The problem is that the cameras are useless at catching people who drive like idiots below the speed limit.

      • outback_ute

Plus they don’t do anything about stopping real high-range speeders. A letter weeks later does nothing at the time.

    • I think in the future insurance companies will “police” drivers with tattle-tale black boxes and punishs offenders with higher premiums. No need for radar guns or radar detectors.

Stop it, New Zealand. Just… stop.

P.S. You need to watch the follow up video, too. They didn’t get my initial memo.

P.P.S. Someone needs to synchronize about a hundred of these.

Looks like a roofer’s nightmare, what with the way those shingles lay over the dormers.

    • My brother won’t do unconventional roofs like the one above or geodesic domes because he can’t guarantee that it won’t leak. Cool looking house, though. Looks like it’s from middle earth.

    • CraigSu

That down spout in the center just ruins the whole aesthetic. Too bad they couldn’t work around that with rain deflectors or something.
