I had the pleasure of attending the Ferrari Finali Mondiali at the Daytona International Speedway this weekend. It’s a huge annual event that Ferrari hosts to celebrate the year’s motorsport successes, run world finals for their various one make customer racing events, show off the XX cars, and give their old F1 cars a chance to stretch their legs. It was a spectacular weekend with (literally) thousands of Ferraris as far as the eye could see. To cap it all off, Ferrari brought out Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen to put on a little smoke show with the 2009 F1 cars.

You’ll be seeing much more from this event throughout the week.

I saw some F1 drivers doing burnouts and donuts at the Goodwood Festival of Speed years ago – most of them can’t do a decent burnout! They just had the cars bouncing off the rev limiter in first gear, making more noise than smoke.

Contrast that to Shane van Gisbergen’s effort after the final race of the year in the V8 Supercars championship, he took it far enough to blow one of the tyres and I presume that he had it in 5th gear (he did that back in Townsville), which would have to be 120 mph plus wheel speed.

That’s disappointing. Fortunately, Kimi and Seb did some fantastic donuts. I’d say it was a perfect mix of noise and smoke. This shot was taken before they Seb even completed his first 360 and not later because I had to put the camera down and just watch the beautiful hoonage unfold with my own eyes.
