The 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo Is An Unassuming Enthusiast Car

“It’s like a rental car with a turbo and a stick.” That’s how I described the 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo. Perhaps initially that’s not a completely fair statement to paste on the plucky Nissan but if you look at it from the “fun factor” perspective it makes sense. Rental cars allow for such care free driving style it’s a wonder that most make it past 20,000 miles. If it’s your own personal vehicle and you hold back ever so slightly it can still be hilarious fun.

Friend and colleague Manuel Carrillo absolutely fell in love with the Sentra SR Turbo and even claimed he had more fun in this than in the 2016 Shelby GT350R. I have since researched local insane asylums and plan on an intervention in the near future. In the meantime you can read Manuel’s crazy words here on CarBlog.

Didn’t Jeff pan the shit out of this thing in an AutobyTel review?

Nope, note the SR Turbo – I don’t even think that version was out when we shot that Autobytel review. I believe I drove a fairly basic Sentra.
I hear good things about this one though… but it’s still referred to as rental spec.

I think without your and Manuel’s enthusiasm, there’s no way I’d take this seriously, although I’d be curious to see how it stacks up against conventional compact cars. Like, is it more fun than a plain Golf, or the current Civic 1.5T?

On the other hand, I want to see Nissan put this engine in more things now. The Juke is already also more fun than it should be, and the Versa Note could nearly get compelling spec’d like this.
