Going to an enthusiast car meet in Slovenia, what would you imagine seeing? I’m pretty sure nothing could prepare you for the awesomeness that was on display at the first ever Old & Rusty picnic meet in Ankaran, a small coastal town, on June 6th. The metal there was weathered or super shiny, the cars glacially slow or very quick indeed.

Hold on and check out the photo-heavy post our local oldschool car enthusiast friends were nice enough to treat us to.

Funky old Volkswagens are key, low and SLO. On the right, you see a locally assembled Mk1 Golf.

This Beetle was originally a burn victim in the ’70s, and it was rebuilt into a working sled from that.

The awesomeness that is an old ’80s Audi, as coupe and sedan here.

Six cylinders!

This BMW E21 looked like it had gotten a lot of love.

If a Sharknose BMW is your thing, you’re probably right.

Which pop-up headlight car is cooler, the X1/9 or the Supra? The Fiat had spent 15 years tucked in a garage in Germany, so it’s less rusty than usual.

Ultra cool Italian boxes. I would have spent half an hour just looking at these Deltas and Alfas.

Some more old Mercs, if the yellow 200 D wasn’t enough.

Just the slightest suspension drop on this 123 coupe.

The red 220 D ran on used frying oil, but of course it did.

And of course, somewhere out there is a guy who loves 300-series Volvos.

I really like these little Polish-built Fiats.

Bright colours work on old Volkswagens, when you’re down south.

And as a final touch, an old Jaguar SS.

There is something vaguely sinister about that eagle/wreath decoration on the VW 1500’s hood badge – perhaps in reference to a bit of iconography that should not be forgotten but is best repudiated.

    • True, although it didn’t strike me as vague so much as willfully unambiguous.

    • Borkwagen

Meanwhile, the SS Jaguar badge looks even more sinister but is actually an unfortunate coincidence.

      • What’s the vehicle to which it’s affixed? It looks familiar but I can’t place it.

Ooof, those 75’s. On my bucket list.

  • Batshitbox

When I was a scooter messenger we rode Tomos mopeds, which are the Slovenian made version of the Austrian Puch. We delighted in applying the Slovenian oval country code stickers to the rear fenders. It being California, though, people thought we meant San Louis Obispo.

    • Being on a moped, people may have just thought it meant “slo(w).”
