Inside the Classic Remise in Düsseldorf, Germany

Düsseldorf’s Classic Remise is a great place for anyone who wants to get up close with near-priceless classic metal. A brick building once built for locomotive storage, these days it’s a combination of a classic car dealership, car storage, restoration shop, memorabilia mall and car museum with a really nice restaurant thrown in as a bonus. Admission is free, and it’s one of the best ways to spend a Sunday in Düsseldorf. I especially recommend a Flammkuchen mit Speck with an Altbier as a companion, after a few hours of intensive classic car admiring.

In this photo-heavy post, I’ll show you the Remise as seen through a 50mm “Nifty Fifty” lens.

Walk in and you’re instantly greeted with various Morgans up for sale. Which timeline do you prefer?

Porsches are nicely common inside the Remise; if it’s 993 you want, or 964 or something even more classic, you can take your pick from several on offer.

This 911 was heavily built into a track tool, it seemed.

Someone had brought in this brown-on-brown 928. It wasn’t cosmetically perfect, but the colour combination was. Manual, too.

Alfa Romeos were also nicely present. I do like the last one of these classic-shape Spiders.

An earlier Spider was parked next to a rare Junior Zagato, a favorite of mine.

Along with the Junior, a Montreal was present, in glorious orange.

More expensive Italian metal: a Ferrari 250 GT/E and a Maserati Quattroporte.

You could also find any variety of Jaguar E-Types from within the Remise’s premises.

Or something else, if you’re more of a Steve McQueen character.

Japanese import XJ-S with a six-litre engine and only the slightest of cosmetic imperfections. Lovely car.

Balanced by this M635 CSi right close by.

The Gullwing was in surprisingly weathered and battle-hardened shape. It seems to have done its share of classic rallying.

    I find the E-type ungainly and disproportionate. Would I drive one? Hell yes, because people would think something special of me. This strangely only applies to the E-type. The XJ-S I just want to bend around a telephone pole in the best way possible.

    Long-term, I'd live with a Morgan.

    I wouldn't kick an orange Montreal out of bed though.

        I'm trying to envision a series that looks as good as that one on TV. The narrow angle cameras help a lot, but not as much as 90 degrees of steering lock, manual shifting, visible rear slip angle, and those beautiful drifts. Obviously we know how to correct a lot of those things now. There was a great article about how it's impossible to pass in F1 because the cars can almost literally stop in their own length. I'm thinking the any-bolt-on-parts class is going to need a subclass where no downforce devices or tire changes are allowed. There's probably nothing we can do about sterile pushbutton transmissions or super-quick racks.
