The Memphis Monorail Is a Triumph of Design

Last weekend I was re-watching the Tom Cruise legal thriller The Firm, and when it got to the part where Cruise’s character had to hide out at the Mississippi River Museum on Mud Island (actually a peninsula) there was something about the Park’s monorail cars that struck me as familiar. It wasn’t until later in the film, when I should have been worrying about the virtue of Cruise’s wife, played by the always capably vulnerable Jeanne Tripplehorn, that it hit me: the Mud Island Monorail system uses lights that make its cars look like really wide Triumph TR6s!

This is the problem of being a car nut, you see aspects of them in everything and everywhere. Now I can never watch that movie again without thinking, yup, TR6.

I saw part of a Hudson in Blade Runner.

I don´t know how to embed images here, otherwise I would give you a
    a rear view of a 1985 "Wartburg 353 Kombi"

…and this is how you do it: 3-corner-brackets open and close the following text, that is somewhat self-explanatory:

And here's how you do it with a functioning image 😉

        <img src="http://i.imgur.com/I0w3sDf.jpg" width="600">

had to re-host it where they allow hotlinking.

Also, the link to the tutorial: http://hooniverse.com/image-embed/

Hehe, thanks! That's 90s internet attitude not to allow hotlinking. Even worse is displaying the image to the one person who has already been to the site, but not to other people. Frustrating.

And now, for my second trick; press Ctrl+F5, and watch the image in your post turn into a purple box with some red error text!

Yeah, bandwidth and storage is cheap now, so I have no idea why so many still do it. I also dig the blurred faces and license plate on that particular image.

            • Sjalabais

Blurred faces and license make sense in an image from the Stasi state at a time when stasi methods are improved, perfected and everywhere. Btw, Snowden has been nominated for the Nobel peace prize. If Jagland really has that backbone he aspires to, Snowden needs to win that prize.

I know what you're talking about. My wife has arrived in phase 3 of watching movies with a car nut:

Phase 1: Me: "You know it's the good guy when they drive a Volvo" – Her: "How do you even know that from that shot?"
Phase 2: Me: "You know it's the good guy when they drive a Volvo" – Her: "Can you f* shut up about those irrelevant cars?"
Phase 3: Her: "You know it's the good guy when they drive a Volvo" – Me: "It is, isn't it?"

      You're still married?

      Despite that?

      • Sjalabais

There's more to it than watching movies together, you know… 😉

  • Drzhivago138

Well, sir, there's nothin' on earth like a genuine bona-fide electrified six-car monorail!
