The World’s Worst Car Is For Sale On Craigslist

Welcome to Craigslist Crapshoot, our weekly search for the most bizarre, awesome, and/or terrible vehicles that the online classifieds has to offer.

Have you ever noticed that there’s rarely ever anything sporty about Sport Utility Vehicles? Fortunately, pick up trucks often have sporting aspirations, and in fact back in ’70s Dodge’s D100 was America’s fastest production vehicle. Today there are a lot of sporty pickups to be had and you found a truckload for sale. We’ll get to the one that best hauls butt in a minute, but first let’s deal with this week’s Quixotic quest.

This week we want to soak in the tears of failure – other people’s failures of course. What we want you to find are unfinished projects, the weirder the better. Mustang-powered Corvette? Heck yeah! Half-restored MR2? Bring it on. I’m expecting that there will be a lot of half-finished former start-eyed dreams out there, and it’ll be your job to find them.

As always, we want your finds to go down in infamy and not in the site’s spam filter. Follow any of the following advice and you’re crap will be known far and wide.

  1. Easiest way to not get caught in the spam filters is to create an IntenseDebate account. If you do so and your posts aren’t appearing, let us know at tips@hooniverse.com and we can put you on the whitelist
  2. If you don’t want an IDC account, you can create a wordpress.com account and do the same thing.
  3. If you’re the Ted Kaczynski type and don’t want any kind of account, then try to place only a single link in a comment and just drop any outgoing link in via its raw URL and not as a text link
Craigslist Crapshoot doesn’t work if your candidates don’t get seen, so hopefully following one of these options will ensure that the floodgates of crap are fully open. Make the jump for a little pick-me-up.

Pickup trucks are about as American as wearing socks with sandals and super-sizing darn-near everything. Of course that handily comes to the enlarging of outputs on our pickups from time to time. One of the most noteworthy enlargements came by way of GMC and Buick, with what was probably the best small sport truck ever released (which of course meant that GM had to kill it a year later) the GMC Syclone. Scandinavian Flick found one for sale in the Bay Area, and it looks pretty sweet.

I’d also like to call out the hammer-to-the-face VelociRaptor 600 uncovered by Muthalovin, about which all I can say is DAY-um! Well done to you both!

I am sad that I only have one thumbs up to give this one. No really good close up shots of the welds, and some of the low detail shots have stuff that looks like it might be dodgy… Good find.

      • Eric Rood says:

The KA24 seems like an odd choice to me, too. Is that a thing people put in Caterhams?

        • jeepjeff says:

I wouldn't call that a Caterham. He points at the LocostUSA forums in the ad, and the first picture has the plywood jig straight out of the Haynes Build Your Own Sports Car manual. I'm pretty sure the proper Caterham kits come with the frame welded for you. Just have to bolt the thing together. This is a Locost. And in the Locost community, if it's a longitudinally mounted four banger, someone has probably stuffed it in a Locost. If it hasn't been done, it's been discussed.

They are complete omnivores as far as power plant choice is concerned. The only engines I've come up with that might get you scowled at nearly universally is probably any of the big, iron, American inline sixes. Mostly because they're heavy and too long. Pushrod V8s cause division, but you'll have comrades within the community.

So, KA24? Not at all odd. Miata running gear is the goto choice anymore, but small trucks get a lot of play thanks to junk yard availability and the shift to FWD for the segments that used to make up the donor base. EDIT: Looking back at wikipedia and the ad, he got the KA24 from a 240SX, so even better, since it will have a cam for a car, and a gear box for a car. Totally within the norms of that community.

Aw man. Sort of want. Forget about chopping the roof and the ratrod stuff. Finish removing the roof for a roadster conversion, put a decent AMCish drive train in it and get it painted and looking nice rather than ratty.
