The Wombat: Wheels, Tires, and Rear Suspension Parts Are In

Jeff Glucker December 30, 2013 Featured, Project Cars, The Wombat 13 Comments

Our 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300TD is going to need some good rubber underneath it. Our friends at Michelin hooked us up… big time. Remember those oh-so-excellent Pilot Sport A/S3 tires I so loved after a few laps at a track outside of New Orleans? Well, we just got a fresh set.

Unfortunately, this means we can’t run the existing 14-inch wheels that it currently wears. That means new wheels. After searching around, we settled on a set from AXIS Wheels. They’re called the OG San, and we love that they look just like the old-school BBS basketweave-style wheels from the 1980s. We may be getting modern wheels, but we appreciate classic cool and these wheels have just that appeal.

Click past the break for our latest video update on the progress of The Wombat.

Big thanks to AXIS Wheels for helping us out with the OG San units, and a massive shout out to Michelin for supplying our new tires!

That's a nice looking wheel there. I don't see it listed on their website though. Kinda looks like an old BBS e50

  • Once again, something that I crinkled my nose up at back in the past has started to look better with age. Those gold painted phony-spoked rims were even more tacky than chrome spoked hubcaps over steelies in the '80s (but less tacky than gold plated hubcaps.) Even now, they're a hair's breadth away from looking like something you'd find on a Hot Wheels toy blown up to big boy toy size.

This is called 'growing fond', as the archaic definition of fond is more addled and myopic than affectionate. Like Shakespeare's King Lear "Pray do not mock me, I am a very foolish fond old man."

Nice wheels, I'd take them for my tacky project car from the 80ies. (Edit: tacky 80ies is a good thing, imo!)
The supporting/ad worked for me, until I couldn't sort by size, #bores, bolt circle, sigh; I have a car and need wheels, not: I like those wheels, which car do I need now?

Naah, should have ordered these wheels in silver, too much bling…

    • But we're going to do a gold chrome wrap on the exterior of the vehicle, so these wouldn't match…

Sooo… It's going to be yellow? Keeps getting better and better.

        • We're definitely not wrapping it in anything… it's lovely as it is on the outside right now.

Is the rear suspension going to be able to handle the torque meted out by the Hemi?

  • labcoatguy

I need a set of those, and a Saab 900 convertible.

I cannot mock your choice in wheels. they simply look like a bitch to properly clean. very nice, too.
