I have nothing against tattoos, but I have never gotten one myself because I am unsure if there is any affiliation so important, any statement so dear to me that I am sure I will wish to declare it to the world for the rest of my days. Perhaps my faith, my wife, my national citizenship come close.

Using my body as a billboard to advocate a particular method of valve actuation? That would be a bit farther down on my list of lifelong priorities.

The motivation behind these is simple brand identification–it's just a complicated way to have the word "Ducati" writ permanently on you, like something you have done to join a club or something. The fact that these three are identical makes me wonder if the original pic is floating on a forum page somewhere.

As a technical writer and illustrator, I gotta say this cutaway, scale-accurate V-engine is more my speed.

I actually compiled those from three different photos I found various places on the web.

No–I mean the original line art illustration, probably from some old Ducati literature, that someone posted under a thread titled "Wouldn't this make a cool tattoo?"

I've seen the original illustration reproduced a gazillion times. (In fact…) I'm betting one of those guys did it first and the other two said, "I need to do that, too!"

Because the guy who will tattoo a camshaft and valves on himself is the same guy who is motivated to duplicate a tattoo he saw somebody had.

And while the cutaway is impressive, I cannot comprehend how any human has the desire to have that on your belly 24/7 until you die.

Exactly. It would kinda be like me getting this.

It looks like they got good artists to do the work too. Especially the first one and the one you posted. Personally though, I prefer something a bit more subtle…

I don't know what vibe I get from that. She's a practical, faithful, unexciting tramp?

I was going to hop on and say that maybe they love desmodromic valves as much as I love push-rods, and like getting inked. I'm only missing the desire to get a tattoo (at this point, it seems like that's the way to wave my freak flag…).

        • Scandinavian Flick ★

I admit, I actually didn't know much about pushrods until recently while having to dismantle half of a pushrod motor… Now I know more than I really cared to, and hell, I dig 'em.

Odds are, you're eventually going to experience valve slap.

    • http://hooniverse.com/ Tanshanomi

      …And bent valve stems.

I have a Firebird screaming chicken tattoo on my left upper arm. I can think of nothing more fitting for an Englishman who has never driven a Pontiac in his entire life. Je ne regrette rien.

If it was on my arse I may have grown a little less fond of it.

I shall henceforth think of you as "Bandit".

So, what you're really saying is "I was really drunk, and there's nothing I can do about it now."

      • http://roadworkuk.com Rust-MyEnemy

No, I didn't get really drunk until afterwards. You have to have quite some presence of mind to demand to be permanently marked with the sign of the Trans-Am. It was either ask for that or Pi to 30 decimal places.

Next time you are in the Sunshine State, I will find you a Pontiac T-1000 to drive.

I've seen that bass up close and it's definitely all that. It's got the Trans Am and 455 decals as well.

I've seen BMW Boxer tattoos and in something worthy of a Bike Snob screed, i saw a guy on a club ride with a Specialized Bicycles logo tattooed on his calf. Personally I don't really get the attraction of tattoos, plus you can't be buried in Jewish cemetery with a tattoo.

  • smalleyxb122

I actually like it, and think that it makes a great tattoo. If it weren't so identifiable with a particular brand, I'd consider it for its mechanical ingenuity. My next tattoo is going to be something mechanical; It just won't be something so specific. This is just a little too close to getting a corporate logo as a tattoo, and I'm not going to ever do that.
