Let’s say you have quite a few bucks stashed away, and you’re looking for a new high-performance toy. Sure, you’d love to have the budget of the big boys and stuff a former rally racer in your garage. That requires six or possibly seven figures. A dealership called Driver Source, located in Houston, Texas, has something that might fit the bill.

This is a 2004 Ford Focus, which has been given a massive shot of holycrapitsawesomenow. Under the hood is a 5.0-liter V8 that is pumping out 420 horsepower. The mill is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, and it sends the go-go-fast-now energy out to the rear wheels by way of a Ford nine-inch rear end.

If I had $79,900 sitting in the Hooniverse bank account, I’d be on a plane to Texas right now. Hopefully I’d have a few bucks left over to tone down the livery (I see this livery and I want it painted black…), bribe someone at both the DMV and the local smog place, and payoff my neighbors to ignore the noise every time I fire it up.

V8.RWD.Focus. I’m crying, laughing, drooling, and my head hurts… Texas, you win again.

    Cool, but 79K? For that kind of chuck, I can think of a lot of cars that wouldn't need fudging at the DMV or a repaint.

      I've seen this car several times when I worked at MSR. You can't put a price on the kind of smile this thing will put on your face.

      You can build one for quite a lot less than $79K.

      Start with my Ornch '00 Focus Wagon (that earns me two HooniPoints right there).

      Get the FACTORY V8 kit from Ford

      Obtain the '88 vintage 5.0 from my father in law's F150 shortbox that he restored from the ground up two years ago (one more HooniPoint) – as an aside, he's swapping the 80K mile engine for a hotter 5.8.

      Hmmm – wife can't drive manual (minus one HooniPoint) so I'd have to go autotragic… but I'd try to go for a 5 speed auto from a recent Explorer or something similar…

      Ford nine inch rear, full duals (NOT "duels" – God, that misspelling sticks in my craw), and black 16" steelies with chrome beauty rings (one more Hoonipoint).

      Keep the roof rack and battle scars of 300K+ kms of daily driving (seven Hoonipoints) and maybe add woodgrain (ten more Hoonipoints).

      By my math, that equals well over a million Hoonipoints for a V8 Focus wagon, done for well under $10K.

    A similar if not the same Focus used to make the rounds with Hot Import Nights when I was a kid. My brother wanted one rather immensely.

      Thanks for that link, I never knew this thing existed, but my life is much more complete now that I've seen it. I always thought the wagon was the best looking of the 1st gen Foci, and that just makes it perfect. God it'd be fun to go to an import drag night with that.

    It's been done several times, both with the old Windsor 5.0 and modular motors. I LOVE the concept.

    A fella could probably build one really sweet fucus with 15 grand. there is at least one company in the aftermakket that sells the bits as a kit. Add your own engine,trans and rear end and there ya go!

    That said $80k is definitely crack pipe pricing.
