Weekend Edition – A First Generation Acura Legend on eBay. Yea, it’s an Antique!

Jim Brennan January 13, 2013 eBay Insanity, For Sale 20 Comments

Continuing on with our 1988 Weekend, and here is a low mileage 1st generation Acura Legend, the car that started the Japanese Luxury Car invasion. Yes, once again this is now classified as an antique according to the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). Is it me, or defining an Acura as an antique seems to be way off…

According to the Pennsylvania Dealer who is representing this car, the Acura is a one owner vehicle, driven only 46,000 miles, and as you can see, this is another Japanese Time Capsule. Remember when these things were introduced? The German Luxury Car brands seemed to go ballistic overnight, as they never really had any competition in the states during the late 70s and 80s. Well, here was a real competitor to their mid-level offerings that featured both luxury and dependability.

This Legend has it all: Leather, Alloys, every luxury convenience feature, a sunroof, and more. What’s not to love about this car. Yes, it is an Automatic, as most of these cars were so get over it.

This is also a no-reserve auction, so the highest bid wins the car. Currently the high bid is $1,375 with over eight days to go. Do you see yourself in a late 80s Japanese Luxury Car? Take a look at the listing here:1988 Acura Legend Sedan LS, and tell me what you think.

If you buy it..remember the engine is an interference engine…change that timing belt.

This is a nice exemple of how bland cars have become, with little make-up it could be launched again as new a new model.

    • facelvega

This could never make it as a new model– it isn't a thousand pounds overweight, doesn't have huge bulbous body shapes that have no relation to usable interior space, and it's just too simple and tasteful. It's a little odd that cars like this came out of the blow and /stockbroker-obsessed, acid wash eighties.

      • Sjalabais

You forgot to mention that the windows are way to big. The driver is not supposed to be able to look back in any way. Make them slots!

O yes it could, it would be a new Civic though.

      • HSA

Wait. Has anybody checked if the hell has frozen over, a geomagnetic reversal has occurred or something? A car company CEO says their car is 400 kg overweight! http://www.autoedizione.com/marchionne-talks-abou

So wait, I thought that legends had longitudinal engines? According to the googles some do. Strange stuff.

    • wunno sev

you may be thinking of the vigor

    • Rover1

The second model Legend and the five cylinder Vigor used longitudinally mounted engines. From the days when engineering held more sway at Honda than misfocussed marketing.

Check back in a few years when the 2nd generation, and especially the 2nd generation 6-speed Coupe LS, qualifies. There's a classic, FWD be damned.

  • sudden1

What a beautiful, low mileage car. Buy it, put a couple of grand in it, ( timing belt ( due to age and not mileage), and any thing else ) and have a wonderful car for under four grand that needs nothing…for a long time. If you know of anybody that needs a car tell them about this one. Heck, they could probably wait on the belt and stuff.

  • mallthus

That engine bay is the reason everything's shoved under plastic today. What a mess!

  • Van_Sarockin

Ahh, that's more like it. Now, if was only a coupe, and a manual, with a lighter interior, and a better exterior color…

  • dukeisduke

It has two hood latches up front – that's attention to detail.

  • C³-Cool Cadillac Cat

    Too bad it's not a Sterling…

    • HSA

      Then again, it's running.

I wanted one of these pretty badly in the early 90s, preferably with a 5-speed (which were available)… that or a first-gen Taurus SHO… or a Saab 9000T (which I ended up with). My older brother's '86 was a fabulous car…. and would be nearly dwarfed by the current Civic.

    gosh that thing is mint
