Quick Shifts: First Gen Thunderbird

Last month when this olelongrooffan and theKid were down in toney Winter Park for the Concours d’Elegance we saw a boatload of cool ass cars and trucks. I have shared many of them previously but I just couldn’t find a category to post this one in so it gets a post all its own. Now while I am a huge fan of stock automobiles, the wheels on this one just scream Go Fast.

I see these and I likey. But I can't understand all the hate for the last one, which appear to be just an S-Type R Jag motor away from this sort of greatness.

  • There are some mean vintage racing versions of these out there. Obviously it takes a lot to get a mid-50s chassis to behave at speed, but I'd totally rock a black one with a Paxtonized FE under the hood.

    • I was trying to remember what that damn fuelie was called..thanks Mad_Science and all the best this season to you, The Missus and the youngsters.

Paxton is a supercharger, not fuel injection. This example has three 2bbl Holley carbs, from what I can see in your picture. I believe the engine is a Y-block, not an FE.

Yes, it would be a 312 ci originally with vastly overrated HP that killed them in stock drag classes.

Looks like the same wheel. What is it?

        • Looks like a Halibrand kidney bean.

Well-chosen wheels can really make a car, without doing anything that can't be undone, as is the case here. It's a great wheel choice that makes this t-bird look just a little meaner.

Those T-birds looked pretty good, but were lamer than the Blue Flame Corvettes. Looks like someone's sprinkled some elf powder in the engine bay of this one. That would have been pretty cool – fifty years ago. But right now, it's not lighting any fires for me. At least this one seems safe from being OddJob'ed.

I dont like thunderbirds that much but that one is nice. put a coyote in it and keep it looking just as it is and id like to own it.
