Apparently, Airstream at one point in the 1980s tried to market its RV as a funeral coach, designed to transport the deceased and family and flowers all at once from the funeral home to the cemetery. Because nothing puts the fun in funeral more than sittin’ on top of a casket in a motorhome.

    There's a bunch of errors there. It should have bee a rear loader, with a pull out tray. (Maybe there is an engine packaging issue that governs that decision?) The flower holders could have flanked the casket to the sides, with longer windows. The passenger windows should have been taller and narrower. And they should have stuck with all gloss black paint, with maybe a vertical chrome landau bar or long grab hold to visually separate the passengers from the cargo.

    Not a bad idea, really. Maybe funeral homes preferred being able to bill for the use of more vehicles, with each being a more modest price than one RV? With goodly passenger capacity, the Airstream can do the work of four other cars.

      Those are front-engine machines, so I think they just went with 'easy' on this.

        I would have thought these would be pushers. Not just pushers-up-of-daisies. Helps explain why these were DOA.

    • I wonder if that's a pass-through or you have to load from the street side rather than the curb side. Maybe that's not an issue in the funeral biz.

    That sure is a lot of RV for a "sleeps one". In fact, i'd say it is overKill.

    This idea was probably inspired by all-in-one funeral streetcars.

    There were some cemeteries that had a trolley car line passing through, or at least up to the gates, and for a while trolley-car funerals were quite popular and less expensive than renting all the horses and carriages that were considered far more dignified and dependable than early automobiles. On the "Elmlawn" pictured above, the casket doors are towards the end of the car closer to the camera, under the "shorter" windows.
