LAAS 2012: The coolest car at the show is an old one

Jeff Glucker November 29, 2012 Car Shows, LA Auto Show 18 Comments

It manages to pack so much awesome into such a little space. I’m talking about the BRE Datsun roadster sitting just outside the entrance to Kentia Halls land of misfit automobiles. This particular racing runabout was campaigned by Frank Monise, and now occupies the heart and garage of Adam Carolla.

Click past the break for a few more photos of this excellent machine.

Not many cars look good with the windshield removed, but this is one that does.

If only Carolla could drive as fast as he can talk. Cool car though.

It's not 24 Hours of LeMons – or even LeMans – but he did win this year's Toyota Celebrity Grand Prix.

I just happen to have 3 MGBs, AND 3 of these R16 engines (as used in the SSS 411).

Weird the way the universe works sometimes.

(edit: This 2000 roadster actually uses a U20, which is the same basic engine block only stroked out to 2 liters, a jackshaft where the camshaft used to reside and a second timing chain and cam on top to convert it into an OHC motor. Odd but true. Worth its weight in bronze.

Also, I have one of these as well. /private junkyard in garage)

It looks like a go cart compared to the Mustang next to it.

Not everyone's a fan, but I listen to Quarolla's (spelled it wrong, just for him) podcasts regularly and he loves this little car. I do like his vehicular taste.

    Humina Humina…

Yes. He's definitely a car guy, regardless of how one feels about his humor/politics/nasally drone. (Also a fan of the podcast, here.)

"The coolest car at the show is an old one"

When has that not been true?

    • http://hooniverse.com/ Tanshanomi

Has either KV ever been the oldest car at a show?

      • http://www.washington.edu/news/archive/52703 mdharrell

Nope. If anything, 1980 is usually towards the younger end of the scale. The '78 is strictly for parts; I haven't pushed it more than perhaps fifty feet since bringing it home.

  • Joe Dunlap

I call shenanigans! The badge says 2000 on the rear and the engine should be a 2.0 SOHC. The engine in this is a 1.6 pushrod.

    • Joe Dunlap

Whoops, my bad. The engine picture wasnt from this car.
      /hangs head in shame/

    • mr. mzs zsm msz esq

Sorry about that Joe, it's me that messed that up in a comment, good eye.
