HCOTY 2012: It’s that time of year, so let the festivities begin!

H’Coatee? Ha-Koati? Hehcowteh? It doesn’t matter how you pronounce it, it’s back once again to close out the year. I’m talking about the Hooniverse Car of the Year. Without a doubt, this is the most important award bestowed upon the automotive landscape, and one lucky vehicle gets to wear the rust-coasted crown.

Dear readers, start thinking about which vehicle you’d like to nominate. Email us your choices at Tips@Hooniverse.com with “HCOTY 2012″ in the subject line. All of the writers on staff are whipping their respective nomination posts into shape as we speak… we’re literally hitting them with whips, forcing them to pick their favorites.

This will all unfold over the course of December. We’ll share the nominations with you, and then we’ll run the final voting post, which will recap all the choices. Finally, if we’re not in a drunken coma, we’ll announce the winner on the first week day of 2013.

Need a refresher about what it takes to be nominated or actually win? Here’s the voting post from 2011, and here’s the story on the winner.

      This truly needs a second.

Stealing from one of the comments to the original story:
"Three reasons Barbra Gunning is the Hoon of the Year and shows us how it's really done:
      1. No power steering.
      2. This isn't just a gearbox with no synchros. This is a true crashbox with gears sliding in and out of mesh.
      3. Differentiates cars by their exhaust note. "

      I'd add:
      4. Regularly driving an 80 year old car over 50 years after the factory closed down.
      5. 101 years old and still doing her own car cleaning and polishing (even if she ropes in an extra pair of hands now and then), AND her own spark plug and oil changes.

I just don't think there can possibly be a better choice.

As we can see, HCOTY is more than the car; it's the love of driving and owning a vehicle that is uniquely yours. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

We're not Motortrend, but frankly, I've oohed and aahed over the HCOTY in person, and I cannot tell you the last couple Motortrend COTY winners. Much more prestigious.

Am I too late to vote for the drift truck?

I will toss in my Christmas truck that would have just missed the nominations from last year (upgraded for this year with a Christmas tree and sound system!). http://hooniverse.com/2011/12/24/hooniverse-chris
