12 Days, 12 Formula One Sponsors – I Need Your Help

Jim Yu October 18, 2012 Formula 1 33 Comments

I’ve been known to engage in unusual stunts.

In the coming weeks, I want to use a good or service every day that’s affiliated with one sponsor from each of the 12 Formula One teams. I unsuccessfully tried this in 2008 when there were ten teams. Back then, I used the following:

  1. Force India– Kingfisher Beer
  2. BMW Sauber– Intel chip
  3. McLaren Mercedes– Mercedes C300
  4. Renault– ING savings account
  5. Toyota– Panasonic phone
  6. Ferrari– Shell gasoline
  7. Williams– AT&T phone service
  8. Honda– Acura TSX
  9. Red Bull– Red Bull
  10. Scuderia Toro Rosso– Puma shoes (failed to purchase!)

This time around, I cannot use any of the goods or services I used in 2008. Kindly give me suggestions. The rule is– If there is a sponsor sticker on the car or uniform at any time this season, it’s fair game. Here are the 2012 teams:

  1. Sauber
  2. Force India
  3. Ferrari
  4. Williams
  5. McLaren
  6. Mercedes
  7. Lotus
  8. Toro Rosso
  9. Caterham
  10. HRT
  11. Marussia
  12. Red Bull

P.S. Thanks and I will keep you posted on my progress.

P.P.S. I am a couple weeks away from owning my Phaeton for a full-year. I will do a write-up on running costs. Any guesses? I don’t even know because I have not been given the bill yet for my last visit and I am dropping it off this Friday to get a window regulator replaced.

Now that you've had the Phaeton for nearly a year, it's about time to replace it. Buy a Ferrari, and you've scratched #3 off the list.

Off the top of my head:

Pepe Jeans. CLEAR shampoo. Head & Shoulders. Infiniti cars. Mobil1. Tata Motors (Jaguar). CNN. Microsoft.

  • MVEilenstein

Does that stupid Angry Birds game count? It was on Kimi's helmet.

  • Manic_King

VW has something to do with Toro Rosso it seems, you can scratch that team off your list.
Red Bull F1 is sponsored by Singha beer and Casio btw.

    • Manic_King

Marussia is sponsored by CNBC, easy
      Force India:
      Whyte & Mackay Scotch
Royal Challenge, India's first Premium whiskey
Pirelli (ar they every team's partner list e.g. not sponsors, would be otherwise easy to buy 1 old pirelli tire)
      AVG Antivirus software

    • Manic_King

Caterham: Visa, Airbus, CNN, Dell/Intel, GE, should be quite easy
HRT is more difficult, Tetley tea, TATA Cars and other things owned by TATA only, also, quite an ugly website…
Lotus is problematic, you need to buy some shampoo or OZ wheels for Phaeton

      • TurboBrick

Tetley is sold in regular grocery stores around here, and not even in the specialty section, no problem.

  • JayP2112

If you did this with NASCAR, you'd have it all down with a trip to the 7-11.

    • I believe you mean Walmart.

      • JayP2112

I thought of that but I can walk to the 7-11.
        Or stumble if needed.

  • I need to import a LADA as soon as possible and sell it to Jim!

    • Manic_King

Snoras Bank went titsup because owner, millionaire Antonov milked it so he could burn it all in Saab and Spyker. Nice
Not sure what year that yellow F1 car is, not 2012

      • It's an old picture of a Renault. It's not current. I just used it because it shows the livery well.

        • Vairship

I think you should buy yourself something from Vyborg Shipyard. Are you sure you don't need a nice oil platform?

  • danleym

I'm sure they all have alcohol sponsors, right? Screw 12 days, knock it out in one night!

    • pj134

      That's the spirits!

    • aciddiver

      12 Days then 12 Steps?

  • pata

Sauber – NEC electronic device (Monitor?)
Force India – White & MacKay Whiskey
Ferrari – Kaspersky antivirus or Acer tablet/laptop
Williams – Head and Shoulders shampoo
    McLaren – Hugo Boss parfume
    Mercedes – Monster energy drink
    Lotus – Japan Rags clothing
    Toro Rosso – Usag tools
    Caterham – anything from GE
    HRT – KH7 cleaning products
    Marussia – CNBC
    Red Bull – Geox shoes

    • FЯeeMan

McLaren – Hugo Boss anything – they did a competition last year for the design of practice overalls for the drivers at each race.

  • HRT… Er, I guess your hormones are OK…

Here's some really cheap or free alternative ideas, which may make it easier to reach your goal:

Sauber: Watch Chelsea vs. Spurs on Saturday morning
Force India: Sahara is now a major sponsor and owns more than 40% of the team, and they own the Plaza Hotel in NYC. Go there, have a drink at the bar. Otherwise, the whiskey.
Ferrari:Use an AMD chip or a NGK spark plug.
Williams: PDVSA is the state oil company of Venezuela and owns Citgo. Buy Citgo gas. Or use a Gillette razor.
    McLaren: Mobil 1 oil.
Mercedes: Wear a Puma t-shirt or sneaker. Or use your Lincoln Electric welder.
    Lotus: Use Symantec Antivirus.
Toro Rosso: Nova Chemicals makes the bags that pre-packaged produce (salad lettuce, etc.) come in. Or ride in a VW.
Caterham: Use your LG phone, watch CNN, or use your Visa card.
HRT: Make a photocopy on a Kyocera copier. To be in the HRT spirit, make sure that you do it as slowly as possible without getting fired.
Marussia: Use a Virgin mobile phone or listen to Virgin Radio online.
Red Bull: Wear a Casio watch.

I'd bet that you could complete the entire list for under a hundred bucks if you tried and have a bunch of money left over.

Plus 1 for Cleasea v Spurs

    • This is a really good, and practical list. Thanks!

  • FЯeeMan

Jim, you are the answer to an advertisers wildest dream, aren't you!?

    • I guess I am, inadvertently.

For Ferrari I wanted to suggest driving a Case IH tractor since they've often had Fiat's normal place on the nose of the Ferraris at Montreal, but apparently not this year. I suppose you could rent a Fiat 500 to cover Ferrari…

  • All right, guys, I have come up with a list. I am going to start the challenge this weekend.
