Last Call – Tired of the Olympics Edition

Robert Emslie August 10, 2012 Last Call 11 Comments

The Olympics are an orgy of sporting events most of which – especially the Summer games – fail to light fires in the hearts of car nuts. That of course doesn’t mean we can’t get in on the fun, as exemplified by the little R/C Minis used to return Javelins and  discus’ to their origins, and these Michelin tires, which are colorfully and potentially copyright infringingly getting in the act.

      The proportions are… unusual.

  • A couple of my gearhead buddies decry any appreciation for any sport but motorsport … and their physiques show it. Personally, I prefer to be well-rounded than well-rounded.

The US women just kicked ass in the 4×100 meters. World record time, baby!

  • Putting the blue, yellow, green and red ones on each corner would make Ken Block's next Gymkhana rather spectacular!

(Yes, I know, it's just paint.)

    • No, it's in the tire. Comes from replacing carbon black with color from silica. Michelin does or did market colored bicycle tires and has test marketed colored auto tires in Europe.

It might be paint. The interior is showing black. Bike tires used to be available in the US in a few colors. As you say, they removed the carbon black.

Michelin has had the technology to run the color right next to the black in car tires since the late 90's. There's just not much market to justify the added expense.
