Craigslist: Insane Yugo is Insane

Jim Brennan July 31, 2012 All Things Hoon 19 Comments

What do you get when you cross a Yugo with an Oldsmobile Toronado? You get this Insane Yugo, with an Oldsmobile Toronado 455 CID V-8 stuffed in the rear. Make the jump to see more…

According to the listing:

1988 yugo with a 455 4 barrel V8 from an Olds Toronado.

This is a one of a kind custom cruiser.

This is a running driving street legal car which is currently registered.

This would be a cheap way to get into the drag race or drag strip scene.

Asking price for this little crotch rocket is $2,000. It’s almost worth it for the 325HP Oldsmobile Big Block, and the first thing I would do it weld up a sturdy roll cage, then have a proper firewall between the engine and the passengers. I bet you could get a waiver to run this bizarro thing at the 24 Hours of Lemons (Murilee, do you have anything to say?)

The question is this: Are you crazy enough to buy this thing? See the listing here, and tell us what you think.

  • What a shame to do something like this to a collector like a Yugo. BWAAHAHAHAHHA!

When new, one Yugo reviewer stated that it had "the distinct feeling of something assembled at gunpoint." Love that line.

Sounds like a fair price for a ridiculous object. I always wanted to like the Yugo. After all, it was simply an updated Fiat 127, and attractively priced. They helped too many friends who could only afford clapped out used cars imagine that they could rock something brand new for once, finally. Too bad they lasted about as long as this drink I'm trying to nurse.

Stick a nice little glass wall behind the front seats, and slap some box flares over the rear wheels, and you'd have a really interesting proposition there. I'm sure they've got the handling and brakes fully sorted out. Even though I'm pretty sure that that distributor is bigger than the front brakes.

  • Needs box flares… BADLY. Then, we're in business…

  • JoeDunlap

Some back of the napkin math tells me that with the windows rolled up, that 455 should be capable of pulling 7 to 9 inches of vacuum in that cabin, inducing extreme giddiness in the driver.

    • Sounds like an ideal female passenger…

  • Metric Wrench

    Peugeot 205, meet Yugo 455.

  • salguod

The angle of the engine makes it look like they wedged the hoist with 455 in through the hatch, literally dropped the engine into the cargo bay, hooked up the fuel line and took off.

    • MVEilenstein

You say that like it's a bad thing.

"This is a one of a kind custom cruiser" true

  • Joe_Btfsplk

Mandatory flack vests and ballistic helmets for driver and passenger…..just to keep things "safe".

  • In Detroit. Makes sense. Buick backed Yugo makes YouGO!

  • JayP2112

I've seen worse but I'm from Tennessee.

  • OA5599

A stock 455 Olds has torque numbers around 500, varying by year and application. The powerplant and transaxle assembly would appear to have the center of gravity somewhere behind the axle. Yugo bodies are 98 lbs of cardboard and duct tape. This car has about that much more in rear bumper armor to protect the rear transmission pan.

I bet this thing is able to wheelie at the slightest application of throttle. I hope it has independent left/right brakes so you can steer it.

    • I was thinking the same thing. Needs wheelie bars and Yackety Sax playing on an endless loop on the stereo.

Hrm… I heard putting a V8 into a small hatchback makes Yugo really fast.

Stop pissing and moaning…someone buy it! Why do these things happen when I have no budget??
