Hooniverse Asks- What’re The Coolest Scoops?

Two scoops, that’s how many raisins are in every box of Raisin Bran cereal. And that many scoops typically adorn the dual flanks of almost every mid-engined car. Or at least, that seems to be the bare minimum. Air scoops on cars, whether rising like Mona Loa from the vast surface of the hood, or gulping on the sides, imply power, and hence are important elements not just of a sports car’s function, but also its form.

It’s such an ingrained visual cue that even when the engine gets moved from one end to another as a show car evolves to production – a la the Mustang I morphing into the production car – the scoops remain, impotent as they may be.

So important are scoops to a car’s machismo that they have become fetishized on some cars – such as the straked editions on Ferrari’s ’80s Testarossa or the fake hood scoops on so many ’70s pseudo muscle cars. Either way, they play a big role in not only the emotional image the designers want the car to project, but also in assuring athletic engine breathing. Of all the choices out there, which scoops do you think are the most cool?

Hmmm, Raisin Bran would be nice for breakfast. . .
