VIDEO: Driving around 1928 New York City

I don’t know how I found this video, but it is pretty fascinating, especially if you have spent time in New York City. It looks like pieces of silent movies slapped together. The film shows various modes of public transport are hooned around the island of Manhattan. As far as I know this could one of earliest car chases (?) ever filmed, and they did a great job even by today’s movie standards.
For those of you familiar with Manhattan, notice the elevated trains (currently only on outerboros and parts of northern Manhattan (MetroNorth Railroad), the brides, and traffic in Washington Square Park?
If you can positively identify any of cars used in the movie you’ll get the “Honorary Hoon of the Day Badge!”

A much more sedate view of San Francisco, four days before the 1906 Earthquake.

Lessons learned: Jaywalking has always been the state pastime of California and there was never a time when you could drive down Market St without running into lots of traffic.
This is my preferred version: (pretty sure this was posted on the 'Verse long ago):

Someone did a mighty fine job of converting that from 24 to 30 fps. Nice almost natural, but slightly slow motion look to all the movement, instead of the more typical, frantic running that we're used to when watching old movies.
And the guy who rides right down the middle at about 3:10? That's a death-wish with a modern bicycle tire and railroad tracks.
I recognized Babe Ruth as the cabbie's second fare…….
Me, too. I had to be him, looked just like him.
The black car is a Model T.
Some of this appears to be from the movie "Speedy." http://www.doctormacro.com/Movie%20Summaries/S/Sp…
I'm going to have to check that movie out.
Off topic (I won't be here for lights out): I recommend everyone search "blooger" on Wikipedia.
You're welcome, Jeff.
Screen Grab for when the fascists that run wikipedia take down your virtual performance art.
Take a new one, it should be edited so there is a reason why Jeff is "important".
Also, you should grab Wert's while your at it.
This is probably a skill I should not have learned.
That is a lovely picture of el Werto. The improved screen grab, because I cannot edit my earlier comment.
Just remember, some wikipedian will be red-faced with nerd-rage when they discover your forays into their realm.
Less than an hour. Vultures I tell you. I did provide information to his significance, too.
And the pretty picture of Roy is gone. 'CSV A7' is wikipedian nerd rage code.
(I'm often one of those dorks who will revert wikipedia vandalism, but apparently, I'm a moral relativist, because I thought this was funny, along with Randal Munroe's indirect mass wikipedia vandalism efforts.)
I would say that it was arguably vandalism. It's a picture of the articles muse. Compromising, perhaps. Nonetheless it is him. And the information was factual.
The information o the blogger is more significant than Ray's autobiography. Perhaps I should a7 his too.
I would say they both were vandalism, and I grabbed the screenshot right away because the only reason I didn't go about reverting it myself was I was in on the joke (which means, someone else would in short order…).
If you wanted to undercut Ray's status as having his own wikipedia entry, I'd edit it to be a redirect to [redacted]'s entry and then kill the links to 'Ray Wert' in the [redacted] article. The best part is, it is probably the right thing to do, and would probably be upheld by the wikipedian community (you may have to play defense lawyer for your act on a few of the talk pages, but it's an entirely defensible position).
At 0:39, there is a Pierce Arrow. I'll guess model 80 with the short(ish) wheelbase.
At 2.28 there is a Mack AC.
The bus at the end is a Fageol.
Also, I've been on the internet, and I found this:
<img src="http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt237/jskitter/hooniverse/PickwickNiteCoachBus.jpg" width="500">
If you look close, you can see Ernie Prang and Stan Shunpike through the windows.
My life has been desolate and bereft. Now I understand, because I have been denied the Pickwick NiteCoach. This shall be corrected forthwith.
The bus segment was actually shot in L.A. I recognize the narrow alley at 5:02 as being Clay Street, a long gone street in the long gone Bunker Hill neighborhood. Here's a pic of the famous Angels' Flight funicular railway crossing over Clay Street.
<img src="http://www.uncanny.net/~wetzel/clayat3rd.JPG">
Also known as the shortest railroad in the country, ha!
It puts the "fun" in "funicular"!
Blimey. Nothing's changed! That reminds me of driving in India, or Naples Italy last year
