Carroll Shelby-owned Toyota 2000GT for sale… and it’s the first one ever built

The Toyota 2000GT is a shapely speed machine that pushed the word “supercar” into the Japanese lexicon. It’s also become one of (if not the) most prized collectible Japanese automobile ever made. Hell, it was even good enough for Mr. Bond himself in You Only Live Twice, albeit in the never-sold convertible version shown on screen. Another person who enjoyed the 2000GT? Carroll Shelby.
That quick Texan took delivery of a couple examples for use during the 1968 SCCA season. One of the cars in particular was tagged as MF10-10001. That number’s significant because it just so happens to be the first production Toyota 2000GT ever built… and now it’s for sale.
Owned by Maine Line Exotics, located in … Maine, holds the title to Mr. Shelby’s former SCCA-running 2000GT, and it’s putting a For Sale sign in the window. Asking price? $1.7 million. The price of any Toyota 2000GT is steadily climbing, throw in the fact that the one seen here is a Shelby-raced, first-ever example, and we expect Maine Line Exotics will have no problem finding a buyer at (or near) that price.

Very cool, but every time I see another remarkably expensive, rare, historically significant car for sale, I think "what would you do with it once you got it?"
$1.7M could build a heck of a workshop, and keep me busy building some impressive vehicular milestones of my very own for a long, long time.
Normally I completely agree with you, and… well… I still do… But this is one of those cars that if I had that kind of money, I would have a really hard time not going all Fry-like on it…

Getting it to CA from Maine? Best roadtrip ever!
As to what would I do with it? Drive the ever loving hell out of it.
…with really good insurance…
People who spend 1.7M on cars can spend 17M on workshops
Good point.
Brother, can you spare a workshop?
I'll give you $1,698,000, and throw in the rust proof under-body coating, and not a penny more!
I'm such a shrewd negotiator.
Well, you just used C* S*'s name in the post title without express written permission. Expect notification of lawsuit in 3… 2… 1…
/it's been fun gettin' to know ya' folks

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Brilliant!
Now cough up the $$$ or you'll be hearing from my lawyers…
Money well spent. So long as it's not Shelby's first Toyota 2000 Continuation Series, MkIII, now with a half inch wider stripe.
Oh, good. A new EV project. http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2012/01/toyota…
Amazing what a name of a human being and a number can do with a price. 50 years from now the Hooniverse Staff Wagon will roll around the auction block, and some of us commenters, who have made a fortune somehow, will try to outbid each other in order to relive some of the good ol' Hooniverse atmosphere of 2012. Will it reach $1.7M? I bet the opening bid will be even higher than that!
I suppose it's possible.

I'll see you, and raise you a dozen eggs.
I'm out. Too rich for my blood.
I live in awe of what you can get for a dozen eggs.
I was thinking of the cholesterol content.
Which reminds me. This Christmas I never got around to using my patent "Caroll Singing" joke. I've forgotten it anyway.
The car? Well, it's nice, of course, and the Shelbyness is nice to have. But I'd rather have a stock one than an example that looks like Wrecks To Riches have had a go at it.
Shelby typically keeps all the -001 VIN vehicles he builds. He must have gotten rid of the Toyota after he realized it was made by someone else.
Smoking deal. Whoever gets it will make that money back and then some.

Uhhhhhh. . . huuuuuhhhhh. . . MF. . . huuuuuuuhhhuhhh
Sigh, it's so beautiful. Now for me to show my blue colours. Look at the 3 time consecutive Trans-Am Championship winning #11 All-Sport Ford Mustang that was driven by Tommy Kendall and built by another blue oval racing legend Jack Roush.

And now we return to our regularly scheduled vintage toyota drool fest.
I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the US supply of 2000GTs (and therefore their prices) is dominated by two dealers. Can anyone comment on that?
If that's the case… I think the owner(s) of this particular car, is part of that domination team.
EDIT: HOLY SHIT, they have one of the James Bond convertible 2000GT cars at the same dealership! Only 2 were ever made.
i just visited this garage yesterday. It is amazing. he currently has 4 2000gt's. and the convertible is actually a one off because the car only came in roadster (no roof at all) or coupe (roof). He took the roof off himself and fitted it with a convertible top. Its the only one in the world. Email me at chase13hughes@gmail.com if you have any more questions i also have pictures!
Yes, and Maine Line Exotics is one of them. They've had both of the Shelby Racing 2000 GTs in their possession at one point or another. I'm not sure if they still have Scooter Patrick's car (the one that's now on sale was driven by his team mate, Dave Jordon).
$Texas
Is that in reference to this?

For 1.7 million, I'd be talking to Shin Yoshikawa about one of his alloy-body copies to drape over the powertrain from a wrecked LFA…
